looking for opinions for a complete ignition set up. was running stock + jacobs Omni-pak.

1975 (duster) 225, 3 speed, 3.23 sure grip (8 3/4 swap), shaved .090 off head, large valves (full port, polish, valve job) clifford cam (.531 lift, .246 in and .256 at .050) clifford 4 barrel intake and headers, currently holley 390 carb (for the moment....keep hearing different carb suggestions)

"weekend warrior" car.

please tell me your experiences, and your suggestions.

If you mean you were running the stock elec distributor with the Jacobs, I don't think you need new ignition. That should be a solid performer.

Reliability of Jacobs' stuff is all over the map. Kind of like buying a Volkswagen: If you get a good one, you're all set. If you don't, you're screwed. And even the Jacobs stuff that lasts never seems to live up to the flowery promises and claims made for it.

There are lots of ignition systems and components made and marketed by companies that don't feel the need to tell lies in order to sell their products.

I am just not all that impressed with the jacobs, and was wondering what else people are using.

any suggestions?

Stock Mopar distributor with the HEI conversion is inexpensive, easy, reliable, durable, better than using the Mopar module, allows bigger spark plug gaps, and eliminates the ballast resistor.

One the simplelist changes would be a Pertronix for the points.

You could then still use the Pertronix as a trigger for the Jacobs or run it alone.


BTW I have a Jacobs Omni-Pak I'm going to move from my old Pontiac Grand Prix (gathering weeds) to the Valiant to see if it runs better (still has points). I got it for my 86 toyota truck, and it didn't work very well. I moved the last unit I got from them around, and found it worked fine on older vehicles that don't have a computer controlling ignition timing (i.e. distributor does it). Ran great on the GP, so I left it there. (I did manage to get some extra stuff out of Jacobs for my troubles (got about 3 different units out of them testing on the toyota), rather than sending it back)

Where did you mount the Omni-pak ?

Every person you talk to will have a different idea. I use a MSD 7 in the race car and a MSD 6 in the street car. They have good tech support along with a quality repair service. I sent a MSD in the other day for a friend and MSD repaired it for free and even paid for return shipping.

thanks for the suggestions.

a couple notes:

I don't have a points ignition, its a 75. it has the dual ballast resistor.

I mounted the omni pack on the inner fender. nothing special. just a couple of new holes.

I am not filmiliar with Pertronix. Someone want to educate me here?


anyone else want to put in their opinion?

The Pertronix ignitor replaces points in older distributors.

I use a Chrysler electronic distributor, GM HEI module, Accel coil, and no ballast resistor. I'm not sure it's any better than stock Chrysler or any other ignition, but it cost me very little, works well enough in my '64 Valiant, and I don't have to adjust points any more.

If you are trying to run any kind of a performance engine, anything less than an MSD is going to be a step backwards from your Jacobs.

I have a friend who switched to an MSD-6AL on his 5.0 Mustang from a Jacobs. The car picked up .2 and 3mph with no other changes, and the Jacobs was better than the stock ignition. :shock:

6AL for me here. :D

It is, actually, in two ways:

1) Eliminates the ballast resistor as a point of failure, and
2) Is designed around the assumption of larger spark plug gaps (0.045") which give better driveability.
