I thought all stock distributors that had any advance mechanism had both vacuum and mechanical advances...?

Really old distributors (pre 60s) and race only distributors have mechanical advance but no vacuum advance. Race motors run at high RPMS all the time anyway, so the advantages of vacuum advance aren't necessary. Any car that sees any amount of street use needs vacuum advance as well as mechanical advance in order to get decent part throttle performance as well as acceptable gas mileage.

Short answer, you want to convert to HEI and use a distributor that has both vacuum advance and mechanical advance. You should also read the posts about distributor recurving and spend some time dialing in whatever distributor you end up using. It is surprisingly easy, and takes mostly time and patience.

Race-only pieces, I agree with, but vacuum advance was common in automotive distributors well before the 1960s. It was used all through the 1950s and well back into the '40s.

So basically the conversion would work well with either distributor Id choose to use? But also it'd be a good idea to play with recurving my
distributor in other words is what Im understanding here?? Thanks
Reed- I guess it's time for experimentation! :D  It's always good
to get a plan together before you start

Having a hard figuring out what my distributor is from. It's a single pickup
distributor with no vacumn advance pod. Any clues?? Possibly a lean burn
or what else would have came out with a distributor like this??

Doesn't much matter what it's from; it's not the one you want.

That would be a "lean burn" distributer. I am looking for one of those.

Well Charlie if that is what you are looking for I will gladly sell it to you.
It's a n.o.s piece that I got off of ebay that I'll let go of reasonably or make an offer on it. It has less than 1000 miles on it as of now. Send me a pm if intrested....

Using a Lean Burn distributor with HEI only works if you plan to find an alternative method of adding an advance or for some unfathomable reason wish to graft a HEI module onto a Lean Burn computer.

The lean burn dist is perfect for using a 7 pin HEI module for triggering EFI. The puter controls advance.
