Well, I reset the timing again.
5 BTDC
Re-ran the valves.
Goes from 0 to really fast - pretty well!

While sitting and adjusting stuff, it appears that the advance is running up to around 25 or so BTDC when I put the vacuum advance back on and rev it???

Problem is that when I am out on the road and I try to hold a steady speed, it surges and I have to keep putting the pedal to it to keep it going.

It's almost like it's starving for fuel at a steady speed.
As long as I give it pressure, it gets fuel?

This make sense?

Could it be that I have a weak fuel pump?

Would the jets I have in the carb be a little on the small side?
They are 55 and 73 if I remember correctly.

Also, the fuel filter shows no more than 1/4 and less when it's running?? And it's never more than 1/4 full at all!

Okay, at least it's running a little better now. I still need to get all of the "slop" out of the kickdown linkages.

At least the kids and I have transportation again! It's been a royal pain in the gonzagas this last few months!

They are so happy now! They get to see daddy every weekend again! Actually, daddy is very, very happy too!!

Getting closer guys!
Later,
Dan

Normal.

Not normal. Remind us: What model is your carburetor? Steady-throttle surge indicates a lean condition (not enough fuel). Could be due to a too-small main jet, could be the float is set too low, could be a fault in the power valve, could be a vacuum or EGR leak.

Can you make the surge get worse by going up to 50 mph in 2nd gear so that the engine is running faster than it would in 3rd/Drive, and keeping your foot steady on the accelerator?

Whenever you move the accelerator downward, the accelerator pump shoots extra gasoline into the intake tract, besides that which is metered in by the jets and bleeds in the carburetor throat. As soon as this extra shot of gas is used up, the surge returns.

Not likely, no.

Again, need to know the type of carb you're running.

Normal.

Hey Dan - you got that same damn disease I got (CRS) Can't Remember S$%^ ??? I got that Holley 500 - can't tell ya which model yet - been too involved with other stuff - and actually th glasses I'm using(WallyWorldSpecials!!!) are not strong enough to read all of them! LOL

Right now, the only way to do 2nd - is if I stop and actually get under there and shift it into 2nd and try it out - between the kids, and the rain, and the cold, and my back - I have not been able to try that one!

After Monday when the kids are back in school I will give that one a try!

Knew that - was just making sure that ya'll understood that I was not sure that it was doing what it's supposed to do - a.k.a. - "Normal" :D and when the "blast" was gone, it went back to the starving mode!

Didn't I post the jet size??
Hang on - I'll check - yep - 55 and 73 - I wrote it down someplace and can't find it to verify it - but I am willing to bet it's spot on!(those #'s that is!)

Okee dokee??
Other questions I can try to answer??
Anything to get this sucker burning rubber will make me very happy!!
Let 'em rip!
AND THANKS!!!
D

PS - EGR??? I got a PCV valve - nothing else

Are you running a 2300 or a 2305? The 2300 should start with a pair of equal jets which might cause a bit of a fuel problem. If you have a 2305 staged two barrel then the primary needs to be increased jet size wise and decrease the secondary jet (73's are great for 600 cfm big block secondary jetting...).

Also we need the 'specifics' of your carb:
Power valve size (6.5? 10.5? You aren't running one of the two stage partial enrichment PV's?)
Shooter size? (open choke plate get flashlight, look at the nozzle above the venturies)
Acc. pump cam color and screw position (#1,#2...pink,orange).

Just off the bat, most 350 cfm Holley 2300's come with 562's in both barrels and a '32' shooter, orange cam, and 6.5 or 7.5 power valve.

If this is just a 2300 500 cfm, then we need to 'square the jetting up' as the 73 are probably too rich, and the 55's are going to be slightly lean...maybe a pair of 61's to start with...

You'll have to pull the bowl off anyway and check to see what PV you have, if it came with the dual stage power valve, this could account for some highway surging as it only causes partial enrichment at certain vacc. readings and has very small PVCR passsages compared to the 'window pane' power valves.

Once you can get the shifter sorted out, a vacc. guage, some driving, pulling some plugs is going to get this all sorted out...(been there, done a lot of that...)

Hey DI

Will try to find time tomorrow to look at all that and let ya know.
Thanks,
Dan

Well, the other jets I had were a 56 and a 50!
I switched the 55 out and put the 56 in.
Didn't think that putting the 73 in the primary position was a wise thing to do.
I will see if I can get some 61's tomorrow after I drop the kids off at school.
The spark plugs are tan and clean. Not white or black - just a light colored tan.

It sounds awesome though!
The only numbers I could find on the carb were up on the horn area - they are 6R 3250 B on the pump housing I found 34R-2178B

I don't know the correct float setting for this thing either, so I just set it so it was level. It was about 1/16 from being level, on the low side that is. Hope it works okay for now.

Guess I will know a little better when I get back from the town trip in the AM.

Talk at ya later,
Dan
