OK, everyone calm down.

Luthastro, the sugestions posted, were viable options. The posters, were giving alternatives, it is up to you to determine your needs and make a decision. From what I gather, from your post, what you need is: get out a phone book and call local salvage yards,
As I've said before, I've done that and get "no mopar" from everyone.
Quote:
go to every mopar based board you can find, and go to www.carparts.com to find a good used trans of the same type that is in the car now, within a small distance to you.
OK, thanks. I've looked for years, but that's one I never found. The interesting thing to me is that folks seem to naturally assume I've never tried the phone book or the internet before and make cutting remarks according to that unwarranted assumption.

As I have also indicated before, the old timers need to recognize that many others haven't had decades to get their bookmarks and heads full of this stuff, and don't deserve being treated as lazy idiots because of that.

Charrlie, actually the site he needs is http://www.car-part.com (searchable used auto parts nationwide). I believe carparts.com is one of JC Witless' sites.
Wow! Thank you. I'd love to have had that reference a long time ago. It looks like Atlanta has what Chattanooga doesn't. That's some humdinger of a site.

Sorry, that's the one I meant. I was in a bit of a hurry, this morning, and went from a 64 year old memory.

What gear is the three speed noisy in. Might just simply be a bad bearing.
The noise is in first gear when slowing down. Your question and something I just read got me to thinking. I put the gear in myself, and I had never heard of having to mike things when you do that. It might just be spacing or something. I have no idea where to get specs on that sort of thing.

Get the three speed rebuilt and put in 2.76 gears out back.
Thanks. Where does a 2.76 come from?

2.76 gears are very common on many slant six A-bodies, mainly the later ones. Be warned however, this will take a HUGE chunk out of your acceleration.

Hm, I'm an old geeser, but HUGE? I suppose something less (apparently) drastic wouild be harder to come by? I already have oversized tires.

That 5-speed idea sounds more and more interesting. I wish I had another car so I could spend some time on this one.

Yep, huge. And life will get a lot harder for your clutch, shortening its life. Highway mileage above 70 mph will be excellent. In-town mileage will be poorer if you have many hills or stop/go traffic to deal with.

Did you forget your post about the 5 speed "RAP" from a Ford?

But I can't do anything remotely like that without another car to drive during the weeks it would take me.

I used a "RAP" 5 speed trans from an 82 Mustang 2.3L.
Why that one? Did it have coincident bolt holes?

1. I might read it if I could find it. How did you? I did a search on "5 speed" and got 3255 hits.

2. Even after reading all that stuff I'm pretty much in the dark. Obviously it will be understood by people who already know these things. I'm like one of the respondents in that thread - some graphics would help tremendously.

3. Is there ANYTHING besides the clutch plate that works straight across?

You should just sell me your car and lease a Cavalier.
