The interesting thing to me is that folks seem to naturally assume I've never tried the phone book or the internet before and make cutting remarks according to that unwarranted assumption.

As I have also indicated before, the old timers need to recognize that many others haven't had decades to get their bookmarks and heads full of this stuff, and don't deserve being treated as lazy idiots because of that.

The noise is in first gear when slowing down. Your question and something I just read got me to thinking. I put the gear in myself, and I had never heard of having to mike things when you do that. It might just be spacing or something. I have no idea where to get specs on that sort of thing.

2.76 gears are very common on many slant six A-bodies, mainly the later ones. Be warned however, this will take a HUGE chunk out of your acceleration.

That 5-speed idea sounds more and more interesting. I wish I had another car so I could spend some time on this one.

Yep, huge. And life will get a lot harder for your clutch, shortening its life. Highway mileage above 70 mph will be excellent. In-town mileage will be poorer if you have many hills or stop/go traffic to deal with.

2. Even after reading all that stuff I'm pretty much in the dark. Obviously it will be understood by people who already know these things. I'm like one of the respondents in that thread - some graphics would help tremendously.

3. Is there ANYTHING besides the clutch plate that works straight across?
