I have the 10/9 set-up on my '70 dart too. Made for some frustrtion when I bought new 10" drums and shoes all around. Guess I should've taken a look at the rear wheels too, huh?

Just to add some more farts to the elevator-
My wife's '73 Scamp and a '74 Scamp I parted out both had 10" fronts/9" rears. Her car now has the complete big bolt pattern power front disc/ 8.25 rear end set up from a 318 '74 Dart.

The real mystery are the rear brakes from said Dart (now on her car).
They are 11 x 2.5s !!?!??
I've never seen 11" brakes on an A-body, and the parts store catalogs don't show 'em either. I used shoes and hardware for a same-year C body IIRC.

Was this some rare trailer tow package? Or just a case of Chrysler using up parts that were on hand? I suppose it's possible that someone swapped the brakes, backing plates and all, from a larger car onto the A body rear; but it would have to have been done when the car was nearly new. The backing plates don't look like they've ever been off the axle.

The build tag and any broadcast sheets that might have been in the '74 Dart parts car are long gone, unfortunately.

11" brakes: Never officially offered by the factory on an A-body, any year, any spec, any package, any market. Not even the A-body taxicabs got 11" brakes, not even on the front, let alone on the rear. The baddest-ass A-bodies (340, 383, 440, Hemi, A38 cop) got 10" rear and mostly disc front.

Most likely explanation, someone swapped. "Upgrade your brakes!" articles dealing with recent-model cars were very common in the '60s and '70s in e.g. Popular Mechanics. Other possible explanation: Somebody special-ordered. (This time the wager's a steak dinner!)

Page 21 section 5 of the 1976 FSM says that 10/9's were stock until the Disc Brake switch over in 12-10-75...

THe code for "light duty drum brakes" for the 1975-1976 model years on the fender tag should be B05 and B22 for 9" rear drums...the rest of the options during those years involve disc brake options.

I don't have any idea what to bet on about those brakes- no idea where they came from. Just that they've been there a long time. It's certainly possible that somebody swapped the bigger brakes on when the car was nearly new; but you know the adage- "Never say never when it comes to an old MoPar!"

BTW, didn't the '68 super stock Hemi A bodies have "big car" brakes- 11" with the 5x4.5 bolt pattern? Those cars aren't even close to being "production" A-bodies, though.

I measured the wheel size and they are 15" rims 5 x 4" centers and the drums are like almost 11" in diameter (has ribbing). So, could I assume these are 10" drums? Sorry, I haven't had a chance to pull the wheel off and actually measure the drum inside.

As anyone found the need to put a sway bar on a '72 Duster?
