Hi,

I don't think there is much difference in any Aluminum 904 except some obvious things.

Cable shifted or linkage shifted (pre or post 65/66)
Bolt on driveshaft flange or slip yoke (pre or post '64/65)
Bellhousing pattern is different for slant six vs small block vs big block.
I don't think there are any slant six pattern 727s, but I believe the factory used sb pattern 727s behind slant sixes with an adapter.
Some of the very late 904s use a lockup converter and different gearing 2.74/1.54 vs 2.45/1.45.
The reaction support shaft (going into converter) is was changed in the late 60s (66/67?).

I would guess a '64 car would have a cable shifted 904 with a flange driveshaft attachment, early reaction support, 2.45/1.45/1.0 gearing.

This is all from memory/hearsay and might easily be incorrect. Feel free to email me if you want more info.

good luck,
mark

Mark, on this point I believe you're incorrect. There was a taxi/police package in the early/mid 70's, possibly into the 80's, that had a direct-bolt 727 in the /6 pattern. The 727 was also used somewhat heavily in trucks behind the /6.

Mark,

You are correct about the SB 727 and adapter plate. They were used especially on early pickups/vans, but are fairly rare. I think the /6 727 came out around 1969 or 70.
