I recently purchased an 81 D-1500 that has been sitting for one year, it has a Jasper reman. 225 and Jasper tranny, with only 500 miles on them.
Seller said it had a intake manifold leak that causes a miss. I started it, it fired right up and idled well, but stalled when I tried to drive it. There was a very strong gas smell. I noticed a strong gasoline odor when draining the old oil. Any thoughts or suggestions as to where to begin restoring the motor? thanks

My guess is a ruptured fuel pump diaphragm allowing gas to get into the crankcase. Try that and give it a good oil change.

ditto on that. i had a slant totally (and i mean totally) fill the engine with gasoline. i was convinced the engine was BLOWN. but no, the engine was full of gas, like pouring out the oil filler spot full. changed the oil and the fuel pump and drove the car for all of HS and 2 years of college before my dad uncooly sold it when i left it @ home for 1/2 a semester....4dr 72 Dart....great car.

I talked to the repair shop they said, they are trying to find a new spark control unit that mounts on the breather. Is this a computer and should I (can I) eliminate it?

Yes, definitely discard the Spark Control Computer and put in a conventional vacuum-advance distributor and a better carburetor than was original equipment on that '81.
