 Post subject: Lancer k-members
PostPosted: Sat Sep 15, 2001 2:26 pm
I will soon be the proud new owner of a 61 lancer! It originally is equipped with power steering, but the gear box is mounted to the frame. I already have a rebuilt manual gear box for an A-body. So, my questions are... #1 Can a Lancer k-member be swapped with an A-body k-member? If so, how much trouble will I be getting myself when I try it? THANKS! Darrin

Darrin, I'm not sure, but I believe that Seymour told me that the pre-'64 K-frame is completely different than any other K-frame. (The discussion took place after he bent the one in his '62 down at Bristol a couple years ago)

It has a disk brake set-up from a 73 Duster, but that is the only modification. The gear box is still mounted on the frame.

Does the 63 Valiant have the gear box mounted on the frame or the k-member?

This is a "do-able" swap that is well worth the effort. As you already know, the 60 -61 Valiant / Lancer front suspension is completly different from the 62 - 66 A-Body set-up.

Here's the good news, mounting positions are the same for all A-Body cars, 60 - 66 so if you get *all* the 62-66 front-end stuff, it can be swapped-in.

I have seen this conversion done before with the only real "tricky" custom modification being the creation of a clearance "dimple" on the edge of each frame rail. This "dent" is needed to provide clearance for the torsion bar adjustment lever's tip, which is "sandwitched" inside the lower control arm on the 62 on up applications. (the 60 & 61 had the t.bar adjuster at the rear of the bar, in the tranny crossmember structure) If you have a torch, the dent is "fast work", just heat the proper location and hammer as needed. "Mock-up the parts or use a 62-66 car as a location guide.

If you need all the parts for this swap, let me know and I can set-you-up. This is a big job, basically a complete front-end rebuild job so plan accordingly. Now is the time for new bushings, ball joints, sway bar, disc brakes, etc.

Going to the 62 on up system will make it easy to get everything you need for the front suspension. Finding parts to rebuild the 60 / 61 set-up is difficult and expensive these days. (offered for two years, A-body only)

It already has disk brakes from a 73 Duster. I was mainly looking to get rid of the frame mounted power steering. THANKS! Darrin
