Well......I looked through the slantpile today and coughed up a bunch of distributors> I finally manged to get a good plaksic gear off an old Prestolite iron dist....after I broke 2. While I was at it I swapped a short fat green spring into the secondary spot...limits the advance to about 1/2 slot.

The timing was goofed by the gear failure....so off came the v/v cover to find #1.....timeder and decided to set the V/vs for the first time since I rebuilt the moder in Sept. Many tight ...hmmmm. A few exhaust were tight because the rocker was hitting the top of the pushrod....so I did a little grinder action(mebbe 10 thou) for clearance. Buttonderup and WOW! The new advance curve makes a huge difference. Idles at 750RPM and I can let out the clutch at an idle without stalling. No pinging throughout the whole RPM range.

All in all a pretty rewarding couple of hours. Too bad I have no more time for the car for weeks....

The borg warner DG122 is also for sure an iron gear.
Not any more. I special orderd two of these from PEP Boys, and recieved plastic. The NAPA DG-404, is also now, plastic. Don't have anyone in my area that can order the Standard DG-11.

BorgWarner = Echlin. Same company. Only difference is the packaging, and the Echlin distributor caps get moulded in tan material while the BW units get grey.

RockAuto can furnish the Standard DG-11. Hemi Performance in Australia can supply a bronze gear for only AU$49

:( Then maybe the one I got last month had been sitting on the shelf a while.

Folks,

Following this thread I called rockauto and got good service...fellow said the Standard is 'hard rubber" so I thought I'd waste $3.00 and see what it is like. Came yesterday, looks like what I have called white or ivory nylon for many years. Fellow also said his supplier didn't have any metal gears. SO, $49 australian isn't too bad compared to an engine rebuild...where is an Australian web or mail address?

Hard rubber? That's a good one! He must've been looking in the catalogue and seen the black gear colour and just said the first thing that came to mind.

Guess no more iron gears, but, um, I have to ask: What's with the rabid clamour for metal gears? Where do you get the idea that without a metal gear, you're facing an "engine rebuild"? All of the stock factory gears were nylon, and they work just fine...

In any case even nylon can get brittle, and I'd think I'd consider replacing the gear with _something_ if I didn't know how old it was.

HI Dan and all,

Well ya know, I think I got the idea that if the gear shredded and moved to vitals on the engine interior the bearing surfaces or close tolerance parts would be permanently damaged. If not so and if the gear parts will merely be in the oil flilter and screen, the I will forget about changing the gear. However, there is a really good gear place here and I may take the new gear to them and see if a metal one is available in another (machine tool) application and let everyone know.

Not gonna happen. Quit worrying about the astronomically unlikely!

It kinda strikes me that if, God forbid, the pin should shear with a steel gear you could tear up a whole lot more with steel than if you had some nylon bits bouncing around in there.

Thanks

I have one of the DG404's in my hand right now that I bought last spring. I bought 5 of them at the time, they had to get them from a warehouse in Virginia, and they are all iron. If someone can't live without one, I will sell one for the $5 I paid for it plus freight.
