 Post subject: Camber Adjustment
PostPosted: Sun Sep 23, 2001 6:42 am
I have a 63 Dart with manual steering and I have a problem with negative camber on the drivers side wheel. The other side is OK.

I just replaced the Wheel bearings but this problem has been going on since I bought the car.

Any time I turn to the left I can hear the tire squealing and when you look at the tire from the front of the car it has Negative camber.

Is there any way to adjust this or is it a sign of other problems?

That is a common problem with many A-body cars.
Moog company makes a special offset upper control arm busing that will add some extra camber in the positive direction. (This Moog part is sold under different brands too. Seems to me I once got Moog parts in a TRW box) This is for later cars. I don't know what the earlier A-body cars used for a upper bushing. I have an extra set here that I would sell you for my cost if we can determine if they fit your car. Also if there is accident damage or rusted frame rail this can also cause your problem. Also if you try to locate these bushings at your local part store they are often listed a a "problem solver" part.

Inspect all the bushings in the front suspension.
Worn-out suspension parts could be the cause, has the front end ever been rebuilt?

Thanks Craig, I am taking this deal one step at a time. The whole front end is going to have to be rebuilt I think. It has been well ignored over the years by previous owners.
I will have to take steps to do one thing at a time until it is finished.

I don't think so DD, I am sure I am going to have to rebuild the whole front end. I replaced the wheel bearings this weekend, But everything is frozen up I could not get the the nuts to let go on the control arms, and I need to order a kit for it anyway.

NAPA has the parts but they are very high compared to Year One and some other places.

It's just a project that I want to take my time on and do right.

I appreciate the site, it has been a lot of help to me as I'm sure it has been to others.

Even though my Dart has a 318 in it all of the information in terms of the rest of the car has been invaluable.

Thanks
James

Check companies like Just Suspensions and PST, both offer good kits for under $200.00 There are also other suppliers so let's hear form other about the kits they have used. I have used the PST kits, usually with the polygraphite bushings.

Check the pitman and idler arms, these also ware-out and have to be ordered seperatly.

I agree about taking your time and doing the job right. I have extra lower control arms and upper A-Arms, I will sell a set cheap so you can get them clean and bushings pressed-in at your convenance, with-out having to tear-down your car. I can go as far as welding on reinforcement "straps" on the lower C-Arms, this makes them stronger / more ridged.

Start your front-end rebuild prep. today by spraying all the nuts & bolts with penitrating oil, (liquid wrench etc.) especially the upper A-arm cam bolts. Do this every week or so untill you get to the actual rebuild.

Thanks for all the advice Doug. I have checked out PST and I am leaning toward their kit.

While I was changing the wheel bearings I did hit all the bolts and nuts with some WD40, but I will continue that and hope that I am able to break loose everything when it's time.

Do you think it would be wise to upgrade the Torsion Bars to maybe a Mopar Performance Stiffer bar, or should I just stick with the stock bars?

I want the car to handle good, but it is not my intention to race it. I just want good response from the car on the road.

Also I would be very interested in the Upper A arms and Lower C arms you metioned having. Just let me know what I would be looking at for those.

Thanks
James

Any torsion bar up-grade really helps handling. Use them if you can.
Sway bars are even a better "bang for the buck", especially if you do a front and a rear sway bar.
