So, I just replaced the power steering pump (myself) and the gearbox (mechanic did that) like, 2 months or so ago. It worked great, up until a week ago, and now it's leaking like mad. It seems to be coming out from the pump, and I think if I tighten where it's leaking it will stop... but still, that's totally annoying. Any ideas as to what could cause it to loosten up so quickly? The ONLY thing I don't like about my Dart is the problems I thought I was DONE with that involved the power steering. Grr.

Where exactly is it leaking from? Many times they leak around the shaft.

If you have a Saginaw pump, this may be relevant.

When I rebuilt mine, it was quite easy (simplier than rebuilding a carb), except the rebuild kit came with 2 sets of O-rings that seal the body to the reservoir and were slightly different thicknesses.

Eventually I found that on the back of the instructions (where I'd overlooked it) was a note that there had been a subtle design change in the pumps. It is easy to use the wrong O-rings; they don't look all that different, and I suppose using the wrong ones could make for a nasty leak.

Well, I took it to a mechanic and he says the pump is bad. I JUST replaced it about a month ago, so I'm going to exchange it for a new one. HOpefully that will fix the problem.

Yep, I'm pretty sure it's a remanufactured from A1 cardone. Hooray.

Unless you really like power steering, I would say just go to manual. Much less of a headache, and better road feel.

I fixed my PS leaks by switching to manual steering. Better road feel, less weight, one less belt to break, more room in the engine compartment...
