I have a 1973 /6 904 trans and a small V-8 904 trans from a barracuda, not sure what year. Are the 2 valve bodies compatiable, I want to put a shift kit in the small V-8 valve body because I have have it already on my bench and hope to replace in the /6 904 that is in my running Dart. Would this work? thanks...Jerry

That depends on the year of the Barracuda trans! Clean it up and see if you can find a date code.

For a date code, what is the format of the code, and is this on the 904 tranamission body or on the valve body? pretty sure cuda is pre 1971
thanks Dan in advance .......Jerry

I was thinking of getting the B & M transpak of which there is only 1 choice for a 904...

Please let me persuade you to buy your kit from Trans-go instead. They really are the best engineered kit on the market. A lot more R&d went into them beside trying to make it shift hard.

I second the recommendation for a Transgo kit rather than B&M. The date code should have a 2-digit year in the middle of a circle, with twelve "pie wedges" around that circle, some of which will have punch marks in them. You count the punch marks to figure out what month of the indicated year the valve body was made in. Sometimes the date code takes the form of a strip, with a 2-digit year at one end and a row of 12 boxes, some of which have punch marks.

Okay... I found the date code, it from 69. it was hard to read but it said 69 with ticks around it like a clock...Can this 69 small v-8 904 valve body be used in a 73 slant 6 904 trans?

74.swinger and slantsixdan ..thanks for the advice on transgo kit, I will be getting it from Summit as Jegs doesn't have it...

any opinion on the Mopar deep trans pan ? other than a flimsy spacer..

thanks again......Jerry

Yep, the '69 valve body will be compatible with the '73 trans. You will lose part-throttle kickdown operation (the only kickdown will be if you floor the gas). Part-throttle kickdown was added to Slant-6 A904s in '69, V8 A904s in '71. If this bothers you, you can swap the part-throttle kickdown parts off the Slant-6 valve body onto the V8 item if you wish.

As for the pan: Chrysler P/N 5211 8806 (42RE pan, heavy-duty deep w/magnet provisions). Magnet P/N 3681 601 (may come w/pan), and reusable double-seal gasket P/N 4295875AC.

TransGo list the applications for the 904 as going back to 66.

Does it work on 65 and earlier?

TCI lists their applications back to 62, so what's the difference between the pre 66 and post 66 904's, and why would one companies kit work pre 66 and anothers not????????

No, if you're trying to modify shift quality on a pre-'66 Torqueflite, do NOT go it alone on the mass market, or use TCI's stuff. Get with Pat Blais ( tflitepatty@verizon.net ), who will set you up with the parts and supplies you need to do the job correctly and without damaging the transmission.

'60-'65 has a front and rear pump, early-type valve body, and twin-cable shift/park control. '66-up has a front pump only, late-type valve body, and single-rod shift/park control.

Dan; if I don't have this part switch over, what is effected...I try looking for the part-throttle kickdown in my 1973 Dart sevice manual and I don't see it, could it be called something else..is this a simple swap...
thanks in advance...Jerry

It is a simple swap. Part-throttle kickdown (or part-throttle downshift) permits a 3-2 downshift at less-than-full-throttle accelerator pedal positions. Without it, the only way to get a 3-2 downshift (aside from pulling the lever) is to floor the accelerator. There is a housing present on the valve bodies with this feature, that is absent (just got a cover plate) on valve bodies without this feature. I don't have a working scanner or I'd scan in some FSM pictures for you.

Dan;

okay, I look and look at the 73 dart FSM, couldn't find reference to part throttle kickdown....fially look at a HP torqueflite book and there it is. said 3-2 downshift and limit valve assembly used on some v-8. went back to 73 dart FSM and found it, they called it shift valves and pressure regulator valve plugs....ok will make the swap.. thanks a lot.....Jerry
