I was trying to do the HEI swap last night/this morning, and ran into a problem.

I got everything hooked up as per the how-to articles, and it will crank and crank but will not fire. Anything else I should check? I'm probably gonna have to put the old stuff back on for now because I need the truck,it's my only transportation right now.

Double-check all your wiring connections and make sure your ballast resistor bypass shunt is connected correctly. Then, try reversing the polarity of the two wires that go from the distributor to the module. If everything's hooked up correctly and you don't have any success, you may have a faulty component.

If this is the '87, he has no ballast resistor to bypass, as it would originally have been equipped with a Spark Control Computer. The one and only ignition switched power wire is a dark blue wire (can be traced back from the voltage regulator).

The main splice (4 or 5 wires spliced together) for this wire is located about midway in the harness between the power brake booster and the bulkhead connector.

I ended up just putting the old crap back on for now, until I have time to try this swap again. I triple checked my wiring against the how-tos and it looks like I had it right,so does that mean either the dist. or the hei module could be faulty?

Did you have the distributor out? Is it possible that your timing is 180 degrees out? Just a thought.

It could be the module, I just returned a brand new one that was faulty.

How could I test the distrbutor or the HEI module? I may try to tackle this project again next weekend if I can figure this out.

Many parts stores have a machine that will test the module for you. As for the distributor, you can measure the resistance if of the pick-up w/ an ohm meter, but I dont' have those specs in front of me.

Well I was brainstorming and thinking back to that day,and I remembered something I forgot to mention in the initial post above. I had a friend help me and he checked for spark, and said there wasn't any. So could that be the HEI module?

Yes, it could.
When I first installed HEI, I used a generic module (and other stuff) from a junkyard Cadillac. The engine ran fine for about 30 seconds, quit, and would not restart. I checked and rechecked, couldn't get it to run. In the process, I made sure of the grounding, polarity of the plug, everything I could think of.

Then I swapped in another module (AC Delco, from a Corvette) and BINGO! I set the timing and haven't touched the ignition since.

I think the first module had something going bad inside, and just chose that first run as the time to go ahead and die.

By the way, I don't think the 'Vette module is anything special, that's just where it came from. And I like saying that I have Corvette and Cadillac parts on my Valiant.

Did you make sure to ground the HEI unit?

Along with the other suggestions, it could also be teh pickup-reluctor air-gap being too wide. It should be .008", set with a non-magnetic (brass) feeler gauge.

You can also test the pickup with an ohmmeter, at the distributor plug. It should read between 150-900 ohms.

Well I bought the module from work (carquest),it might have been the lower priced version. I guess there's a chance I got a defective one. I wish I had another known working one to try,the only other module I have is one from a '83 el camino, but that has the multiple prongs on one end.

OK,I gave myself two options. I went to the pick-n-pull today and got the wiring for the multiple prong module,so I can try the module I already have (I know it works),and I got a regular 4 prong module off of another car. Hopefully next weekend I can get this figured out.
