I'm putting the front wheels on my newly-assembled 10" sbp drum brakes.
The hole pattern matches but the wheel won't squeeze over the hub so the back of the wheel touches the drum.
They're not snagging on the drum - it's too tight on the center hole.

The SBP hubs and drums are from a 66 Dart
The wheels are all 14 x 5.5 J

The hub sticks out only 1/2".

The wheels fit fine on the sbp 9" drums that I used to have.

are you sure they are mopar wheels? IIRC f0rd wheels will present this problem sometimes. how far off is the center hole?

NOT CORRECT FIX but can be made to work
you could have the center holes cut larger, but the center hole must stay in the "true center" of the wheel. not keeping the hole centered will make the wheel UNbalanceable at 97% of places that spin balance tires. a machine shop should be able to do it no prob, though I have no idea what it would cost. I wouldnt want to take to much off though.

if they really are mpopar wheels, I have no idea.

good luck

I was told they were Mopar wheels.
The four wheels came from 3 sources, but look identical.
One wheel is definitely Mopar (from a trusted source) and looks just like the other four.

The thing is, they fit when I had the stock 9" drums.

The hubs aren't painted, but the wheels are.
I can get a few thousands maybe by sanding off the paint from the ring that contacts the hub.

I can get all five nuts on so that all their threads are engaged.
All 10 front wheel studs are new.
Could I just lube up the wheel centers and slowly and evenly tighten the nuts until the wheel is stretched over the hub?

I don't recall that anyone other than Mopar ever had a 5x4" bolt pattern (SBP). If the wheel fits over the lug nuts, or fits a 9" drum then it must be a Mopar wheel and cannot be from a Ford or any other brand.

I think Dakight is right about there not being other 5-on-4" aside from Mopar RWD. I'm beginning to suspect there's something the matter with the hubs.

if they are mopar wheels a dog dish will fit --- hopefully you do not have the metric version of the 5 x 4 pattern (5 x 100 mm) which is very common
also had some differences from 62 to 69 on 13"steelies --the older wheels would not fit the 10" hub-- but the 69's fit fine -- both 13" & both sets were mopar wheels

Any pics?

also are your 10" drums finned or flat?

Aren't all mopar hubs with 5 on 4 wheel studs only for 60s-70s A-bodies?
Only Lancers, Darts and Valiants had small bolt pattern, right?

Each wheel had 14 x 5 1/2 J stamped on it.
The 14" sbp wheels came out the same year that the 10" drums came out, so they are made to go together.

I have a few more pics on my throwaway camera. I won't have time to get it developed on put on a CD until tomorrow (hopefully)

No fins - plenty of clearance on the drums. I can slip a finger between the drums and the wheels.

The spare fits fine.

But I read "14 x 5 1/2 J" on all of them as I cleaned and painted them.

It has to be the paint. I'm going to sand them now.

I sanded off the paint and chamfered the trailing edge of the hub-hole with a rat-tail file.
I put some silicone grease on the bare metal and the left front wheel slipped on fully.

I recently learned that these wheels are not designed to be hub-centric.
Well, with these accidentally oversize hubs and hand-finished hub-hole on the wheels, I have hub-centric wheels.

I need to get the guys from NIST or SAE to certify them.

I saw some old Centerline wheels a few years back in a bone yard that were 4" on center bolts and I was told that they were from an older Chevy or GM product. He wasn't specific about the year but the setback obviously wasn't going to work on my 64.

They were probably 5 on 100mm which were used on several GM products as I recall. 100mm is close to but not exactly 4" and while they'll possibly bolt up they won't fit correctly and are likely to cause problems later.

This has me a little concerned. The only 5.5" wide small bolt pattern wheels I'm aware of were Barracuda Formula S wheels. I could be way off base here, but as VDart mentioned the wheels should accept a dog dish. If they don't I'd be concerned that the wheels are 4x100mm. I would like to see the wheels.

I'll say :!: 4" is 101.6mm. 1.6mm off is actually slightly more than 1/16" off. That's gotta put studs in quite a bind.

Minor nit: They were available on all A-bodies, officially starting in '65, some were around to see 'em in mid-'64, through the end of the small bolt pattern. They were standard equipment on such packages as the Formula-S and the Duster 340, but they were available on "all".
