Does anyone know how to check the capacitor that attaches to the positive side of the coil, or where to get a new one? The one on Kermit was cherry (at least looked cherry! :lol:) until I had to take off the %#@$*&# alternator bracket to get the head off, and I buggered it up... I usually just toss these, but I'm still running the factory AM radio in Kermit. Any help will be appreciated!

Last I checked they were availible from auto parts stores, ask them to search for "radio interference capacitor" They were only a couple bucks.

Check rockauto or kragen or napaonline for pictures to match up.

Hmmmm, what they sell looks just like a points condensor... I wonder, is it the same thing? (None of them look like the one that came off).

Thanks. Does that look and attach like the original? The other offerings I saw look just like points condensors, with no provision to attach under a 5/16 bolt.

Doesn't look identical, but it is meant for external attachment and does have a terminal that'll connect easily to a coil terminal.

Pretty darn close. I've never seen the capacitance measured, so they may be a different "size" capacitor. Anybody have the electrical specs for them?

I think the radio condensers tend to be of larger capacitance than the ignition ones. Also just remembered that when I installed an RC-1 in my Valiant, I also used an Echlin coil bracket which had a condenser mounting tab, because the RC1 and others like it lack the "legs" that permitted the factory condenser to be mounted under one of the coil bracket bolts. I'll dig up the coil bracket P/N later.

Dan, an RC-1 is the standard points condensor as well - I have several in stock.

Anybody ever disect one of these things by the way? :lol: It's just a mile of rolled up "tinfoil" :shock: (aluminum, I'm guessing, with some sort of celophane insulation between the layers). Going by what I know of capacitors, a check the original one (2884870) showed it was still functioning properly, that is until I resoldered the mounting bracket on! I guess I overheated it with the gun. I'm going to convert an RC-1 by soldering the bracket to it, this time I will heat only the bracket with a torch, tin it, and stick it to a carefully warmed up condensor. Then I can install it as original.

Remember, there's no functional difference between a "condenser" (capacitor) used for the one function and a "condenser" (capacitor) used for the other function. The only differences are in capacitance and form factor. As previously mentioned, the original-style suppression caps with "legs" spot welded to the can are NLA.
