Hello Forum!

I'm new here, but this looks like a great place.

I bought an '87 Dodge pickup yesterday with a 225 slant six. Does anyone know the horsepower and torque of this engine?

When I saw this truck, I fell in love. It needs a lot, but there's no rust. I'm a carpenter and handy with tools and figuring things out, but I don't know about auto repair. Before I ask a bunch of questions, what can I do to help myself? I'd appreciate any advice about websites, books, manuals, or anything else that will help to get me up to speed.

Welcome aboard.

If you watch eBay for a long time you'll eventually find a factory service manual for considerably less money than most want. That's a good start.

Welcome onboard. Your 1987 slant-6 truck, in stock form, was rated at 95 horsepower and 170 lb.-ft. of torque. This post will point you towards three worthwhile books to buy. The Factory Service Manual is indispensable; do not substitute an aftermarket (Haynes/Chilton, etc.) book.

Feel free to ask questions on here, and spend some time mousing around on the site and reading old posts.

Both are in the ballpark of a hamster on a wheel. If that's what you're after, you're gonna have to do some serious rebuilding on the engine. That's what I was after, and it has taken quite a small chunk out of my wallet and a lot of my time. If you keep lookin around this forum though, you'll find lots of great tips and tricks that will really help you out. Without it, I would have yanked my engine and dropped in a big block by now. Because of it, my '82 slant D150 will keep up w/ a stock 318. (and I'm still wrenchin on it)

Thanks for the feedback. All is appreciated.

Ross, Dan, I'll get a factory manual.

Dan, I'll get the two other books you recommended as well, and thanks for the HP and torque numbers.

Cstryker, thanks, but I'm satisfied with the power as is. I just need to get back and forth to work and be able to carry a little lumber now and then. I like your quote; it's always seemed to me that Voltaire defined the meaning of democracy in that one short statement. Honestly, though, defending others' rights to the death? I'd be willing to get a tooth ache, maybe heat rash, but death?
