My last tank really surprised me...25.3! When I first got the car, it was usually between 18-20. FWIW, the last tank was nearly all highway driving, but it was still a pleasant surprise.

170, carter 1bbl, points, 3 spd stick, 7 1/4 rear 3.23 ratio, 185/70/13 rear
tires, power nothing, basically very stock AFAIK
65 mph = about 3000 rpm

I figure it is about stock weight, mother nature lightened it up a bit, but I
figure I put that back with tools and the stereo.

I have not done much scientific tuning yet.

I fill up every day as my gas gauge dont work
on my 65-70 mile daily commute 50%city 50%hwy
I get between 13.6 - 19.0 with 16.5-17.5 being the normal range.

with such small fillups it is hard to make sure you are filling the tank
to the same "fullness" each time. I think that and my foot are the biggest
factors at this time.

I would like to get it in the 20's, hoping that a ball and ball 2bbl super six
and a elect dist with a custom curve will be enough.

oh, I also always run the max sidewall pressure in my tires which is 44psi
for my tires.

how is it that a 2bbl gives better milage than a 1bbl???


if thats so..then does that mean that a 4 bbl can give better milage than a 2 bbl?..im new to this and i need to know before i make any changes.

Not sure how to explain it. but with a 225 it works. I plan to see how it works on a 170 one day here. I am quite sure it is explained here somewhere, or someone can better explain.

1966 Dart 270 4 door, 225, 904 auto, working factory air, power steering and brakes, points, 13 inch tires, not sure of the rear end gear. It usually averages between 18-21 mpg combined city / highway.
I am also looking at the two barrel swap (I've got everyting except the kickdown linkage) and curious to see how the effets the mpg.
Also going to try the HEI ignition when I run across an electronic distributor.

With my 3740lb Satellite (with me and a half tank of gas) with fairly stock 225/904, 8.75" 2.94 ratio w/215/70-15 tires (40psi) I'm getting 22mpg on the freeway. In the mid-teens around town. Any faster than 65 and gas milage really drops, still in the high teens though. The things I've done to the engine is added electronic ignition (stock set up with with a recurved distributer 32* total advance, 8mm Accel wires, MSD Blaster 2 coil), clutch fan, 2" exhaust with a Magnaflow muffler and a #58 jet in the Holley 1920. Really simple mods, but proof that heavy cars can get decent milage.

The 2-bbl has smaller venturis than the single 1-bbl does. The higher velocity helps the fuel to better atomize.

In answer to the question at hand, on my old '70 Duster:
- 17 mpg stock
- 0.030", Comp Cams 252M, ported head w/stock valves, head milled 0.055", 6>1 header, 2.25" exhaust, elec. ign. = 21 mpg.
- + OD 4-speed = 24 mpg
- Custom screen under carb = 29 mpg
- Power Plate (no longer available) = 44.7 best, 38 average

If you take some regular household screen and a spray can of brakleen, spray at the screen at a 90* angle. Slowly tilt the top away from the can and watch the stuff coming out of the back side. Eventually you reach an angle where you can see the spray hit the screen, but seems to mostly disappear. If you keep going, you just puddle the brakleen and it runs down your hand.

Duplicate that angle with the screen under the carb and watch your power and economy soar. Do not use aluminum or regular steel screen as they deteriorate in a short period of time (guess how I figured THAT one out?!?). Find some stainless screen with a similar density.

As for the Power Plate, Ray Henry in Foley MN was selling these aluminum spacer plates that went between the carb and the manifold. They had coolant jackets going through the body, with an inlet and outlet. The bores under the throttle plate(s) were slightly tapered; maybe 3-6 degrees. They had 20 pitch screw threads turned in them. In the ad I still have, they show a pic of a SBC with a Rochester 4-bbl carb. There is a 6" clear plastic tube showing the fog generated by the fuel coming through the carb. Next pic shows the same set-up but with the Power Plate installed. The clear tube is clear, with no fog.

The Power Plate made stupid power and jumped the mileage through the roof. I actually had to pop the hood 2X to prove I only had a 6 and not some warmed over 318 in it.

Was the "power plate" like the current "swirl-torque" spacers sold by Summit but with carb heating provisions?

stocker 71 dart swinger (225, 1bbl) i get 18 in town
somewhere around 22 on the highway (although i did get 24.5 along I-81 south in VA- was going between 60-65 on that section, lot's of cops )

MPGMike, you can't leave us hanging like that Mike. That is such an amazing MPG figure that you would think all cars would have been set up that way. This brings up the old conspiracy theories about oil companies buying up patents to take them off the market. Do you think this device (or pair of devices) would work on any carbureted engine? I put a standard swirl spacer under my 360's theromquad carb and it did improve the mileage by almost exactly 10% but not anything amazing like you experienced. Why do you think the spacer is off the market? Do you think they could be put back in production?
