 Post subject: HRM Slant Sickness

Doc,
Are the power numbers from the Hot Rod Magazine articles from an engine dynomometer or a chassis dynomometer? I'm interested because I tried running a similar engine combination on Motion Software's Desktop Dyno, and that said that it should produce around 200 horsepower or better. This makes some sense if the magazine info is from a chassis dyno, due to driveline losses (if I remember correctly, normally 15 to 25 percent right?).
I want to use my desktop dyno to simulate my engine buildup, but if it gives me numbers that far out of whack, I really can't trust it for this engine combo. The desktop dyno doesn't claim total accuracy, but it is usually pretty close.

just remember that when you load info on dyno its" garbage in garbage out" make sure your head airflow and carb airflows are correct also compression ratio are right on. i did dyno 2000 and came within 8 horsepower of actual.

Thanks for your response. I have tried entering all the data as close as I can to the real world example. I am using an older version, Desktop Dyno version 2.5. Unfortunately, I don't have the exact cam timing specs, so I have had to 'guess' what they were. Also, I am using the most restrictive head configuration the program allows, which should be close the the slant six head. Other than the specific cam timing, everything I have is as close as I can get it. What were the cam timing events you used in your simulation? If anyone can provide the actual cam timing events (for any cam, not just the Clifford 276M), I would appreciate it.

The results were off a chassis dyno.
I need to go back to the Dec. issue, I thought the last page or so discribed and showed some of the dyno testing.

Yeah, the last page of the Dec. issue does show some of the dyno testing; I'm not sure how I missed that. Looks like my results weren't too bad after all!

Use the search function with key word: cam events,
There are a lot of posts below listing detailed cam timing / events which you can plug right into your dyno simulator.
