Just wandering if anyone has considered using the jeep 4.0 in there little mopars. I know its not a /6 but with all due respect it is a mopar.
With the avalibility of these engines & cheap also & having OD trannies that bolt right up to them I thought it would make a good swap.

Anyway I have 63 dart & I am going to do this. I am about two months away because of waiting on some money I have coming. But having fuel injection & OD with available performance parts I couldnt resesist. I am also installing a turbo ( which they have kits availably but cost to much, I am making my own). They also have things like supercharger & Aluminum heads & you name it as far as aftermarket , if you wanted to go this far.

Just thought I would throw this out there and see what thoughts anyone had on it & maybe some others would be interested in the same for there little mopar.

Sounds interesting, but you will have alot of fabbing to do, and I really hope you also upgrade at least your front brakes and suspension.

The Jeep 4.0 is an excellent engine. The latest-model units are an excellent illustration of what the slant-6 could've/should've/would've been if they had kept it up to date instead of letting it die a slow death of strangulation and neglect. You will have some fabrication to do, for sure. Engine mounts, possible K-frame/oil pan interference, and you will be well advised to do a lot of measuring before you start this project, because the 4.0 is a very long engine, and the pre-'67 A-bodies have very short engine bays. Also, there's no telling what interference or other incompatibilities you might run into between the Jeep trans and the Valiant floorpan and crossmember.

Interesting project, but it will not be an easy, fast or inexpensive one.

Oh no question there will be fab work, I have big blocked pre 66 A bodies before there was stuff able to do it(back in the 1970s) opps I am telling my age. Anyway I know what I am getting into.

As far as the 4.0 I have seen Jeeps run low 13s n/a with just a few things done, and thats threw 4 wheel drive stuff & heavy jeeps. I cant remember what a /6 dart wieghs but the 4.0 shouldnt be any heavier. It is amazing what they offer for these motors. They even have a alumimum Block & head for them.

I may have to fab a oil pan but the main problem I see is if it will fit under the hood(4.0 pretty tall also). But I will find out soon & post back with results if they are good(& if it want work out).

It sould be interesting if it works out. I have seen dyno sheets well above 500 HP on these motors & some claim to be way beyound that.

And yes if they had keep on with the /6 it is untelling what we would have now out of the little /6. I built a few back in a day but havnt fooled with them in 20 years.

You know there is a reason the \6 actually slants. It was to clear the hood. I suspect the valve cover will hit the hood, especially in a '63.

But the slant is a long stroke motor. The aussie 'hemi' 6 has commonly been used to re-power the older A-bodies, this comes in 215, 245 & 265 c.i. displacements. The Jeep motor could well be similar sized.
The hemi is a tight squeeze lengthwise I believe.

Maybe in a '65 and later, but the '63s and '64s had a lower hood line.

just put a cowl on the hood! the results of that combination will be amazing. i had a cherokee and that thing was fast! beat anything i raced, and it was stock! the jeep engine is probably about the same height. good luck, take lots of pictures and post often. i will follow that one for sure!

I picked up a 63 4 door car today. I will beable to start doing some measering & checking as soon as the car gets hauled to me. I have found a few 65 & 66 dart bodies & am looking into buying these also but the 4 door car will be good enough to start figuring to see if it will work.

Yea I think the Jeep 4.0 is about exactly the size of the hemi 6 Auzzy motor. Might have to run electric fans but no problem there. Well soon see as far as fit. As far as performance I think its a no brainer, the jeep motor screams & is technically still a mopar, and cheap.

had a 04 wrangler in the shop today and just for kicks i measured the engine.

30" long(front of timing cover to end of block)
12" wide(not including accessories)
17.5" tall(pan rail to top of valve cover)
motor mounts are centered 13" back from front of engine)

FWIW... that is close to the 265 Hemi's... they are about 32.5" inches from bellhousing flange to the front of the water pump pulley.

The '63 will pose some fitment problems you won't run into with a '64-'66. The '63 firewall protrudes further into the engine bay, for instance.

Thats good to know thanks , good thing I just picked up a 64 the other day. I have been waiting to get my hands on a jeep motor, but with the numbers quoted in the reply above I can get some ideas on it.

The more I reseach it I find it is a shame the slant six doesnt have a better flowing head. It is a better built motor, its to bad the Hemi 6 head want fit on it. Then we would have the same flow as the jeep head.

To be honest I didnt relize how good the /6 could perform even with the head it has until I got to researching things.

Anyone think it is possible for us to cast our own head. I know a few people that cast small stuff at there garage but not anything at this level. But I did some research on this and it looks like it could be done if someone knew anything about such things.

The 4.0 can also be stroked to 275.6" with the earlier 258 AMC crankshaft.
