Hello all! First, let me say that it's refreshing to see so much enthusiasm for 6-cyl performance. Finding this message board is a Godsend.

Okay, now to the heart of the matter, I've recently aquired a stripped (burnt-out) '64 'Cuda that I'd like to drop a /6 in. HRM's Slantsickness got me drooling over the prospect of a 13-sec. 6-cyl. sleeper. That being said, I'm in the process of getting fiberglass parts for my 'cuda (fenders-inner and outer, hood, decklid, ect.) and after her "Jenny Craig" session, I hope to get her to weigh in the neighborhood of 2550 lbs. (stock curb weight is approx. 2775, so I think it's possible) and with my 240lb. rear in the seat, I'll be right around 2700. Thus I figure I need around 200 rear wheel HP to get into the high 13's (13.9's) at around 97 mph. After reading several (100's) of posts on this board as well as pouring over the articles, I think I've got an idea on the setup needed to attain such lofty HP figures.

Here goes:

225ci block ('68-75 for strength)
Milled & ported Cyl. head with oversize valves (1.70"/1.44") for 9.5-10.0:1 CR
Clifford Ram Flow intake (nice!)
Dutra Duals Cast Iron Headers (beautiful work, DD)
Camshaft: any suggestions? (I'm thinking about Crane's 228 powermax mechanical cam...290*/290* adv. 228*/228*@.05 .460/.460 lift; or Crane's
248 powermax: 248*/248* @ .05, .540/.540 lift both ground with 112* lobe separation)
2 1/4" dual exhaust into 2 1/2 single with dyno-max ultraflow mufflers
Any suggestions on Carb (625-650 cfm 4bbl?)

I'm hoping to get my longblock assy. much like HRM did theirs, but with a little higher CR and a hotter cam. Any suggestions on decking the block/milling head and what type of pistons should I use???? The car will be a weekend warrior only, never driven in traffic/inclement weather and will use 93octane gas for the trip to the track and 100 octane when I get to the track...... whaddya think? Is 200 RWHP attainable without N20/Forced induction?

Sixer,

As with any combo, you will need to do some dialing in to get it to run as fast as you want it. There is no replacement for trial and error and every combo is different. That said, you should have no trouble making a street car to get 200 BHP and run high 13's. My Dart with some wheelspin, pump gas, and 2800-3000 lb race weight has run 14.30's.

You are definitely on the right track. Don't waste time with the Crane 228 deg cam. I've used it and it probably won't be big enough. I've no experience with the 248, BUT it sounds very close to the 250 @0.050", 0.540" cam that's in my '64 Dart. I would go with the Edelbrock 600 4 bbl for overall driveability and tuneability. This is just a preference of mine, but I think they work great - especially for a street/strip car. Don't go too nuts on the exhaust. I have dual 2" to the rear axle and it's fine.

You are on the right track, a light car and lots of head work are keys to "fast" SL6 success.

If at all possible, find those 7 inch 198 con rods and build a "Long Rod" 225. (found in 70 - 74 "base engine" cars & vans) Doing this will allow you to go oversize on the bore, use lighter pistons / narrow rings and get the high compression ratio with-out a lot of head and block milling.

Other things to track down would be a windage tray and the double roller timming chain / gear set.
I would think about grinding all the rough edges off the crank, rods and pistons, then get everything re-balanced.

Cam choice is a "hard question" and we will need more info. before "zeroing-in" on one. I will say that a 112 lobe seperation is a bit wide for a max H.P. set-up. Tube steel, long runner headers will also help generate more high RPM horsepower.

I just want to throw my two cents in.

You dont have to go wild with the cam nor carb. Whatever you choose, just remember this, if someone is using a .540 lift cam in a 3400lb car w/driver, and your car weighs
2700lbs w/driver, you will NOT need a .540lift cam to compete with that cars combination. Same goes with the carb,if the 3400lb car is using a 600cfm carb, I would assume 500cfm would do the job in a car thats 700lbs lighter. Less weight less radical!!!
