Industrial applications all used automotive-type exhaust manifolds. Marine applications used water-cooled exhaust manifolds. It's been established what this particular piece what we're talking about is for.

Hey Dan, I was not doubting the origin of this manifold, but along the same subject line asking about possibility (or first hand knowledge) of any other strange manifolds. I know slants have powered all kinds of machinery over the years, so it would not be a surprise to find some other oddball manifold had been made at some point. You seem to be positive that has never been the case?

I'm not positive, just pretty sure.

That's unmistakably a turbo flange. Four bolts on a normal exhaust pipe flange is practically unheard of.

Well, whoever owned it before, I own it now (or will as soon as the payment transaction's complete). I wasn't gonna bid on it, but at the last minute decided it needed to be "in the family" here. I did not want this manifold (and the two other pieces the seller has found, with sequential P/Ns cast into them) to get snapped up by someone who would hang it on his wall for bragging rights. I'm probably not gonna use it (h'mmm...is that the little devil-voice in my head I hear, saying "Use it! Do it!"?), but I figured I'd better snag it and someone here who'll use it in a buildup can buy it off me for what I have in it.

Good score Dan! That would have been my plan. Take lots of pictures and measurements while you have it.

I don't know if my turbo project project qualifies as an awesome buildup since I'm only shooting for 400hp or so. Heck, I don't think that manifold would even allow the turbo to clear the Hyper-Pak intake.

I'll probably try a new cast iron exhaust manifold and modify it to fit the turbo. The fabricator that built my roll cages TIG welded a couple of exhaust manifolds for me with nickle rods and they held up.

Seller just sent me photos of two additional parts he found with sequential P/Ns, that go with the exhaust manifold. Here are pics (click each for a much bigger one, deliberately left extra-large for full detail). I am no longer completely confident that these parts are for the turbodiesel version of the engine...one of those aluminum pieces looks an awful lot like a mount for a 2bbl carburetor, and the turbodiesel engine didn't use a 2bbl "throttle body" that I remember (will need to go back and look at the docs on that development programme).

I'm having a hard time visualising how these pieces fit together.

Thats pretty slick! It looks to me like it is the bits and pieces of a draw through two barrel setup with the BBD bolt pattern!

I think it obviously is missing the turbo, but I am betting it would be the same turbo put on 2.2 liter cars (knwoing Chrysler engineers penchant for parts standardization). Then again, if this was the 60s-era gasoline slant who knows what type of turbo was on it!

The carb clearly mounts on the piece with the vacuum tee. It looks like there are provisions for exhaust pre-heat for the carb judging by the two threaded holes on the exhaust manifold and the two threaded holes on the carb mounting piece.

The other 90 degree bend piece looks like it goes between the outlet on the turbo and the intake, with the standard BBD bolt pattern. Looks like it has a port for a vacuum/boost guage, and it looks like that other wire might be a knock sensor pickup?

Hoo-eeeee! Looks like a pretty slick setup! I can't wait to see some more indepth photos and write-ups about it.

I wonder if this didn't come off some oddball industrial, military, or farm application. Like a turbocharged aircraft tug or combine or something.

That isn't the 2.2/Garret flange on that exhaust manifold, it looks more like the Holset/Ford/TIII flange. Furthermore, the 2.2 flange is about 15 degrees from vertical and that one is virtually horizontal.

If I read your post right Dan you snagged the manifold out from under me. Thats ok. I had planned on it going into my pickup but will come up with some other plan. It would have stayed in the family so to speak and went to good use. I am glad it went to a good home.

I had to think very carefully about what I was doing to make sure I didn't step on anyone's toes here. I saw your bid and wasn't about to knock you out, but I had some "inside information" (e-mail from the seller) that he had an offer of $250 on the table locally, and I suspect that individual made the second-to-last bid that knocked you out (see the bid history). Once that happened, I felt comfortable throwing in a last-moment bid. Do you agree?

I am not sure that the two extra pieces were for this exhaust manifold but maybe for another prototype project.
