PostPosted: Thu Nov 15, 2001 4:42 pm
65 Barracuda, 225, Holley 1920.
I have one of those see-through fuel filters, and when I shut the engine off, the gas slowly drains back out of the filter. When I start it there is large bubbles constantly flowing through it. I'm having hard starts and hesitations. It has a 1 month old fuel pump and carb. rebuild, but this problem just started. Also when it runs, the filter is only about a 1/4 of the way full of gas. Is that normal? Doesn't the fuel pump sort of act like a check valve when you shut it off and not allow gas to flow back into the tank?
It has a cleaned gas tank. replaced the sending unit sock filter, and new fuel lines (the rubber ones). I don't see any fuel leaks anywhere.

Also, a totally different question, I'm being told by exhaust shops that they can't run 2 inch pipe all the way up to my manifold because of clearances. Haven't some of you run even 2 1/4" pipe. Should I just keep trying around?

Thanks for your help.
Terry.

I had one of those see-through filters years ago too. Same thing, lots of bubbles and only 1/4 full. I guess it's normal, nothing to worry about.

Many 2-bbl Volare / Aspen cars with slant 6 used 2-1/4 pipe from the manifold to muffler from the factory. I had a 2-1/4 pipe made for my 1975 Valiant with no problems, however, the place that made it was very skilled in using their machine to make it come out right the first time. I'd keep looking around for another shop.

My 1980 Volare has the 2 1/4 factory exhaust. (part of the engine upgrade package) also included a larger air filter & something alse that I forgot. Unfortunately it is a California car, so the 2 bbl was not available....

I just noticed this Slant 6 car on Ebay with a clear fuel filter 1/2 full of fuel. Click on the underhood picture to enlarge it and see the fuel filter.
