Wow. That would be a giant leap backwards in transmission efficiency, robustness and reliability, compared to the Chrysler Torqueflite that fits without an adaptor.

Wasn't the powerglide a two speed transmission?

Hum, I have always been lead to believe & told that the PowerGlide on all three accouts was above the Torqueflight.
You can find a lot of silly nonsense posing as "facts" on the internet. I'm not saying I'm right and the rest of the world is wrong; certainly there are plenty of people racing successfully every day with the Powerglide. But guess what: There are also a lot of people eating the slop McDonalds foists off as "food" every day, too. There are a lot of people managing to make Chevrolets and Fords hold together long enough to be considered "cars" every day, too. Popularity does not imply wisdom.
Quote:
On Horsepower holding ability it is famed to be the best there is.
Actually, a solid 5" diameter steel shaft between the engine and the rear axle would be better for horsepower holding capacity. Who cares? There's no slant-6 you can build, for which you cannot build a sufficiently robust Torqueflite.
Quote:
But I wander about the 904 holding up to 600hp plus infront of the /6, and then the 727 looks like it would be alot of drag on the /6 if you used it.
Makes no sense; the 727 does not have significantly higher "drag" than the 904.
Quote:
As far as efficiency, how much drag does does the TF produce compaired to the Poweglide. With such small CID of the /6 the least amount of resistance would be best for power to the wheels thats for sure.
Even assuming the Torqueflite offered less "drag" than the Powerglide, which is a dubious proposition at best, the Powerglide has only two speeds. What was it you were saying about efficiency, then?

There is a valid reason why many race sanctioning bodies require a scatter shield on cars a full two seconds slower w/Powerglide or Turbo Hydramatic than they do w/Torqueflite.

You actually need to ask Team Green I think...in one of the racing news they did this swap since they had felt the 2 up shifts of the A-904 was a hinderance vs. the 1 of the PowerGlide....

According to their drag times, the A904 was quicker shifting if I remember right and had faster 1/4 times than the sluggy PG... (anybody remember which SSRN it was in...way back?)

I had inquired about this adaptor a few years back since 700R4's were cheap and easier to get here than A-500's ...I'll just stick with the A-833OD, thank you.

An adapter I WOULD like to see is the one used by a guy in an old slant six news issue- he converted his slant six duster to front wheel drive using the transmission out of an early 80s seville. Those Sevilles had torsion bar suspension so I think that helped. But what a cool modification! I'll have to dig around for that issue.

H'mmmm...you sure it was the Slant-6 News? That article isn't in any of the issues in my complete collection. I do remember someone using a TH200R4 (yuck! As bad as Chrysler's A604) in a turbocharged application, but it was still RWD.

Yep, it was the Slant Six News. The guy took a duster and chopped the back off and turned it into a "Ute". He called it the Dustero X. It was front wheel drive, and he had put a whole bunch of difference motors, fuel injections, and turbos on it, but wound up putting the slant back in. Power windows, power locks, etc... It looked pretty clean from the pictures though. I will dig it out and scan it and post it.

Lookin' forward to it -- maybe I'm missing an issue. Will you please note which issue number/date/main subject it is? Thanks.

Reed,

Are you sure that the Dustero X was front drive? I'm thinking it was rear drive as I remember something about an F-body rear axle.

Found it! Slant six news No. 57, pages 38 and 39. 72 Duster. The article says, "The current transmission is a GM 200R4 automatic overdrive unit from a 83 Cadillac." I thought this was the FWD unit used on the Sevilles of that era, but I could be wrong.

I will get this article scanned and posted, hopefully tonight.
