I finally got to installing the "new" re-built '83 Dodge /6 in my '63 Valiant with the stock '63 automatic transmission. Everything was just grand until the flex plate wouldn't fit the crank on the later engine. Back to the Frank Adkins book. Appearently after '68 the center of the flex plates for the newer engines is larger by ~ .020" dia. than that the older ones and the torque converters have changed. Question; is the best thing to do is to have the old plate machined to the new size so it will fit the new crank AND the old transmission, or will the '68 and later flex plates fit both the new crank and the '63 transmission? As always, thanx for your help and consideration. By the way, an education is a fine thing and some lessons don't seem to come easy. Regards. RMDV

Torqueflite Patty (Pat Blais) sells a bushing that I think will solve your problem. I don't have his contact info but others on here do.

Use the 68 up flex plate and a crank adapter bushing. the bushing can be had from: Pat Blais. tflitepatty@verizon.net 206-365-1966.

Yes, you definitely need that adaptor bushing, even though everything'll bolt up without it if you use the right flex plate. Without the bushing, you'll lunch transmission front bushings and seals.

www.wildcatmopars.com sells the bushing too. Around $20 inc. shipping last I knew.

Thanx for the responses, guys. I have the bushing; in fact I got two from Wildcat, just in case I lost one, but didn't realize I needed the different flex plate. So the '68 flex plate should work with the '83 engine and the '63 904 as I read the replies. I'll call Wildcat tomorrow and see if they have one laying around. Again, as always, thanx for the help. Regards.

'68 and newer 904 flex plate is what you want. They aren't expensive. I'd just buy a new one.
