i recently installed a 904 behind my 71 duster. the old trans. had no reverse, so i obtained a 904 from my pal. the problem im having is that the new trans will not upshift out of 1st. i have park, reverse, and 1st a.o.k. my friend has said from the get go that the trans worked great when he pulled it and hes not one to b.s. me. are there any other adjustments i could make to possibly fix this problem? will adjusting the kickdown linkage have any effect? also, for some stupid reason i moved the band adjustment bolt out of curiousity and it may not be back exactly where it originally was. could this also be a cause for this problem? i really hope there's something else i can try before i condemn this trans and spend a whole other weekend putting another one in. thanks for the answers, sorry for the long post...

From my ATSG A-904 manual:

Tighten adjusting screw on kickdown band to 72 inch pounds (8 N.m) then back off 2 1/2 turns. Then tighten lock nut to 30 ft. lbs.

How long has the trans been sitting around?

Could be crud buildup in the governor.

ok, so here's the deal... with the kickdown linkage maxed all the way to towards the front of the car, i can get all 3 forward gears. they all upshift late, and its tricky getting it into 3rd. if i move the linkage backwards, it gets worse and i loose 3rd. its also downshifting in odd parts, but i think thats due to the band adjustment. could the band adjustment help with the upshifting problem or am i up a creek without a paddle?

also, i just found out that the trans sat in the previous car from 83 to about 2002. my friend only drove it sparingly for a few years in his field until it rotted out. the fluid level is spot on, new filter, no leaks... any ideas? thanks again guys!

I like the crud theory; might be time for a proper cleaning.

how does one go about cleaning the governor? im not all too familiar with transmissions and ive never taken one apart other then simple filter changes. i work at a national automotive chain and i have access to transmission flushing equipment. i know flushing in and out of itself wont clean much, but we do have cleaning agents that SUPPOSEDLY clean up internal crud. i know flushing is no miracle fix, it never is. but would the combination of the cleaner and flush help remove any crap in the governor?

i know a duster and a scamp are essentially the same vehicle, but is there any difference in the kickdown linkage? it really seems that if i had just a little more adjustment that id be able to get things right. i dont want to bend the linkage or half a$$ cob job some abomination of linkage to give myself more adjustment. i still havent gotten the bands set as i dont have access to a tourque wrench that goes down to less then 20 ft lbs so ill have to get moving and get that set. ill keep messing with it and ill see what i can fandangle and keep you guys posted...

Are you still using the original stock carburetor? If not, that might be the problem. I had to get a kickdown lever extension for mine as it was too short for proper adjustment. This is with a Holley 4bbl on a 318.

Well if it's all original, then you should be able to adjust it and set it just as the factory did...

well, the band adjustment did the trick. it was a mile off, i wasnt even close before. i had a fun time with the ever so versatile gator grip socket since i didnt have any 12 pt sockets available at my friend's house. i hate having all my tools at work... my kickdown linkage still has to be maxed all the way out, but the car drives nice. its a little tricky still going into 3rd, but i guess thats to be expected when you buy a used 30 year old transmission. thanks for the help guys!
