Well, the block is back at the machine shop for a .100 shave off of the deck. The machinist sure gave me a look when I asked him to shave that much off of the block. He said he hadn't cut that much off of a block in a long time. He said it would take him forever to do it, he could only shave a few thousanths at a time. I told him I wanted to get the compression up to around 9.5 to 1 and he agreeded that that sounded about right. Lou and I did the math and it should work out.

The only thing left to decide on is the cam.

Hi

Don't know if your looking for cam suggestions? If this is a street car I reccomend the Isky 228*@.50/.465 lift. I purchased this cam on www.racesearch.com for 132.00 plus shipping. Put it in a 100k short block milled the head .060" and put in stiffer valve springs. I run an offy intake edelbrock 600 4bbl hooker dual outlet headers/dual 2 1/4" exaust w/turbo mufflers. no head work yet-coimng soon. It is in a 74 swinger 3550lbs w/me in it. 3.91 suregrip 8 1/4 and od 4spd. The car runs 16.7 at 83 mph and the cam will pull the car along at 1200 rpm in overdrive and get 16mpg-I like to have my foot in itIt pulls well to about 5400 rpm. Any way my point is This is a great all around grind. I can't wait to see how the car will act w/more commpression and some head work. Hope this helps Dan Trump

Mike,

This seems like good cam specs and a good price for the head, valve springs, and compression you have. Should match well with your carb too. It's little milder than the cam in my '68, which would also be a good choice if you can still find one (MP 0.490" lift). From what I can tell, Clifford may be the only company making grinds in that range (around 235 deg @0.050"), or maybe you could get Hughes engines to grind one for you. I think any bigger than that will be too much for your valve springs and 9.5:1 static compression.
Bottom line is, if you want it to idle well and be most efficient (power and economy-wise), you should match the static compression and cam duration.

If I did it all over on my cars, I'd run 10:1 static comp with my MP 0.490" cam, and 10.5-11:1 on my '64 with 250 @ 0.050" cam. This would be for pump gas running. Right now, both cars are a little above those specs ('68 around 10.5-10.8:1, '64 around 11.25:1).

With your car weight and the 4 speed, that Isky should pull hard, and be quite smooth and well behaved with 9.5:1. My guess is with the 3.23 gears, you'd be running around mid 15's, if not better.

Keep wrenchin' on it!,

Lou

Suggest that you look at Comp Cam's catalog in the back for their custom grinds. They list a 247° @ 0.050 duration cam with .518" lift that sounds like it would work well with a 9.5:1 comp. ratio engine. Ramps on the cam are made for .904" lifters. Your can select lobe seperation angle, 110-112° may be a good start.

We are using this grind on the intake only, with their 251° duration grind on the exhaust @ 108° lobe seperation angle for a 11:1 engine with big valves and head work. Still not running yet but close. Comp's standard cams for the 6 are way too mild, only just better than a standard grind (early '70s) and I think they are patterned after Chevy/Ford grinds, ie, not for .904" lifters.

If it is the isky i am thinking of it is .448" lift and 228* at .050. i loved that little cam! reed cams will do custom grinds as well.
