Today I got off the freeway and my car died when I put in neutral. I was able to fire it up again and nurse it the three blocks home. ( dying at every stop in neutral/manual trans) popped the hood and found a considerable amount of fuel leaking from the carb. out of the vent where the accelerator pump rod is. All I can think of is that the float might be stuck and letting to much fuel in the bowl with no place to go but out the vent. does that sound right to anyone? I think I'll try and rebuild it tommorow and see whats up. any thought?

Yep, you've got something the matter with the float and/or inlet needle and seat. What's the provenance of this carb? Is it an old original, a reman, something else? Unknown?

Cheap fix (well maybe).........

Disconnect the fuel line or cutoff fuel flow anyway you can.

Run engine until it dies.

Reconnect fuel line/flow.

Try again. You might get lucky. By running the carb dry, the needle valve opens up fully, and when you reconnect the fuel you might just flush out whats preventing it from closing fully (assuming that there's something stuck in it). The needle valve doesn't have a chance to do this otherwise.

I assume the carb is original but rebuilt once or twice. cant say for sure. the car has a cold drivability problem, I'm assuming accel pump. so I'm gonna rebuild it anyway, see if that does the trick.

unrelated question: does holley manufacture new 1920's?

Yep, go through it and see what you find.

rebuilt the carb this morning. found two badly pitted check balls, and a stuck fuel inlet needle. new needle, chack balls, gaskets, accel pump. idles so smoooootthhh now. bog down off throttle when cold is almost non existant now. on the hole it runs alot better. not bad for my first bbs rebuild if I do say so myself. I also moved the accel pump linkage from the far hole to the center ( where the manual recomends) would like to go for a long drive but I'm on call this weekend so it'll have to wait.
thanks guys
