What part of the number do I need to focus on to know the date for sure? First digit or last ones?
What are you basing your guess on?

2806830 is the casting number of an RG block (198 or 225) cast between 1968 and 1975.

Just looked at the car. Its a 68 Dart
The engine has been changed.
Numbers on the block behind water pump housing are as follows
06194
24633430-1
Can the exact year be determined from these numbers?
I bought the 904 trans too. Not sure of trans year but I like it to be the 68 orignal.
My '68 Dart has a '67 style RG slant in it...and it is original as far as I have been able to tell. I believe the date of sale on my Dart was January '68, so it could've been built using left-over '67 parts. This has always made me wonder what kind of torque converter my car has. Time will tell...but all I know is that I'm going to pull the engine and measure before I ever order any parts.

What is meant by "1967-style" engine? You have 3 freeze plugs instead of 5? How have you checked for engine originality?

Yep, 3 freeze plugs. I assumed the engine was original based on that everything else in the car looked untouched when I bought it, and there was nothing about an engine replacement in the car's records. It's POSSIBLE the engine had been replaced at one time, but unlikely I think with only 130,000 miles on record and the car being driven constantly through 4 owners before getting to me. I'll get some casting numbers off the block tomorrow out of interest.

Even better: Look for a partial VIN stamping on the block, maybe near the rearmost spark plug or on the edge of the engine side of the bellhousing flange.
