I'm hoping to get a complete super six setup next week. The carb on the setup is a remanned one so I've been looking for options. I've pretty well settled on getting a new Holley 2300 (is jeg's part # 510-O-7448 correct?) How many linkage issues will I have? Will either the 1bbl or super six kickdown work or should I get the lokar setup? What other new 2bbl carbs
for about $250 should I consider?

You'll need the lokar kickdown for sure, and a Mr. gasket #1937 adaptor to use the Holley 2300 (and a tube of good "goop" to seal it).

I can't remember which was the good 2300 as "new" from summit/Holley, one of the 2300's has no choke provision and was for "tunnel ram only".

Make sure you get the 350 cfm carb, unless you are running large cam and valves, the stock engine won't use any more than that.

The good news is: 7448 should work out, the bad news is:

You have to install a manual choke system (cable/knob under the dash) or may some $$$ for an electric choke kit from Holley)...

The Jetting on that is like 61's, and I think you can actually jet it back to about 52-54 depending on your driving habits to start with (the slant will be over rich on anything over 56 with the stock cam), leave the PV at 8.5, and the shooter at "31" (you may back off the shooter to a 25 or 28, use the nozzle type)...


If this is your first Holley 2300, get a book on Holley carbs and read up first, there's a lot of tuning opportunity here. You might also get a spread of jets like 52,54,56,58 so you can dial it up or back...make sure you get a vacc. gauge to check for manifold leaks and see where your engine likes to come in at. You will also need at least one 2300 rebuild kit if you rejet the carb. Lastly you will need an air cleaner for a Holley 2300/4150/4160 (or even one off a 70's Ford should do it...)

Thanks D.I. Lots of great info there, just what I needed. This will be my first major carb project so there's plenty of reading in my near future. Going to take your advice and look for a holley book soon. Looks to me that spending the extra $$ on the electric choke conversion and the lokar setup will be definately worth it.

Oh yeah. As far as the air cleaner, was hoping to see the super six one under the hood. No way to make it work? If not, oh well. Don't have a problem going with something chrome.:-) If I was to go with an open element type, could I switch the breather on the valve cover to a filter type? Any drawbacks to not feeding that back into air cleaner?

The crankcase breather topic was recently explored in another thread. I believe the final decision was that, so long as you are using a filtered breather, routing it through the air cleaner only serves to keep the engine bay a bit cleaner at high rpms. (The "breather" can theoretically act as a vent when vacuum drops off.)

Regarding the choke, the cheapest place I have found them is at Advanced Auto. They beat all the other chains by a significant amount, and were right aroudn Summit's price before you tacked on the handling charge.

It is theoretically possible to use the super six pie tin with an adapter, but you would be reducing your throat diameter and possibly causing some airflow issues. I would go aftermarket.

You 'can' use the super six one, if you are near a sheet metal place...for a small sum they could take your base cut the throat out with a plasma cutter, similarly cut the throat out of a cheap aftermarket tin...then have them spot weld the Holley aftermarket tin throat back into your super six can, repaint black and nobody will be the wiser.... (I was going to make a dual snorkel super six tin using the snorkels out of a few scrap 1 barrel pie tins, just haven't had the time at the shop...

Sounds like adapting the super six cleaner may be a little more work than it's worth. On the bright side, my junkyard list seems to be shrinking. If anybody up here needs a super six air cleaner and/or kick down linkage let me know. If so I'll pull them, otherwise I may just leave them, depends on price. Hopefully gonna go to the junkyard monday.

Had a bummer of a day at the junk yard today. The 78 volare I looked at before with the super six is gone. The only other slant in the yard is a 1bbl in a van. Just hope somebody pulled the car, got a feeling it got scrapped. :-(
