I have been offered a 4 speed that is supposedly on a 440 from a 77 shortbox. that is all the info I have on the tranny. I have a 75 225 with a 3 speed floor manual in a duster.

my question: is this a good canidate for a swap? if so, I am guessing it is a linkage custom job to get it to work.

all things considered, what is a good price to offer the guy?

Not a good swap candidate, no. If you are trying to swap a 4-speed into your Duster, you want an A833OD from a '75-'76 A-body (Dart, Duster, Valiant) or '76-'80 F-body (Aspen, Volare) with 225 engine and 4-speed transmission. You will need the bellhousing, transmission, and shifter assembly w/linkage. You may also need some different clutch linkage—I'm not certain on that. Try www.car-part.com for used-parts searches.

Have you looked at the truck trans? Does the shifter poke out of the top of the case? If so this is a real truck style transmission that is not suitable for passenger car use. To use it behind a slant you would need a bellhousing from a slant that used this large, bulky, poorly geared for passenger car use gearbox. The bellhousing in question is large. It likely won't fit under the floor of the Duster, will mount the starter in the V8 position, your clutch linkage won't mate up, and it's very heavy. Not only that, but you'll need the /6 truck flywheel and clutch. Take Dan's advice or stay with the 3 speed.

there are a variety of possibilities that would make this a bad swap. first, if it is a top load shifter, there are issues with the floor tunnel, and linkage.

if it is the old style 833 od trans, then shifter mounts are setup in the wrong locations. The truck trans has the same shifter mounting locations as the b/e body car trannies which are not in the same location as the a/f body car. The truck trans can be adapted (see the bigblock dart website) but it would be much easier to find the right transmission as Dan recommended.

okay- I see now.

I just wanted to ask because I have no experience with truck 4 speeds, I have never owned one, and had no idea what the differences were.

Also it might have a granny gear which would be useless in a car, putting you back to 3 gears...not a good idea

Same thing except in the auto trans. I have a slant 904 out of a '72 truck that i'd like to install in my 67 Barracuda with a 74 block and crank. See any problems with this?
