So, does anybody know anything about a high performance /6 that runs on propane? I live in Austin, where alternative fuels are readily available. I understand that propane is a lot higher octane, so that you could easily use a 10:1 compression ratio or more, and the fuel delivery system is under pressure, so that might help things...

What do you all think?

I'm not aware of any high performance slant sixes running on propane. However, it is possible and quite doable. The system you would put on a /6 would be very similar to the one on Tom Jennings' 1963 Rambler. While the Model 425 mixer on my winter car, a 1977 Pontiac Parisienne, is larger than what you would need, the basic set-up is similar.

The fuel tank is usually a major concern for most people and the shelf above the axle in the trunk is a good location. I have a recertified 86.4L / 22.85 USG (propane capacity) tank in my Duster that is fairly unobtrusive (other than the fairly large retrofitted vapor box around the fittings).

The Technocarb 4bbl carb system would also work but it is much more expensive than going the conventional Impco route.

The Technocarb system is a feedback system that maintains a stoichiometric fuel mixture. I believe that it is possible to use a MegaSquirt fuel injection ECU to do closed-loop control of an Impco-based system with a wide-band O2 sensor.

I have had all the parts, necessary to do a turbo/propane slant six for several years. Just too many other projects ahead of it. I purchased a 64 Signet with a glass front end, about 1 1/2 years ago. I think this would be a good candidate. Do I hear any volunteers

I wish we didn't live so far apart. I'd be up for building a turbo propane slant. With hard exhaust seats and good valves I think it would be great.

I used to take care of some remote microwave sites. Some had 30kW propane fueled turbo Mitsubishi driven generators. Others had 45kW normally aspirated 350 Chevys also on propane. The bigger sites were diesel. Where I work now we have two 750kW generators driven by 2300 cubic inch Cummins V12s. The turbos on those (two each) are bigger than my head. And I wear an XL helmet.

I have the Impco 425 mixer and Model "E" vaporizer. The turbo is a Rajay 375 with a "E" flow compressor. I don't remember the turbine A/R, have to take it out of the box and look. The turbo is brand new and the propane system was removed from a Ford PU with a 302. The nice thing about the mixer, is it will bolt right on to my 2 bbl manifold, and even the linkage is a direct swap.

The Mitsubishi turbos we had were draw through. Can you connect the vaporizer's regulator vent to the top of the carburetor/mixer so it would be boost referenced? I know there has to be some way to raise the fuel pressure along with the boost.

Yes there is a threaded port on both the mixer and vaporizer, that need to be connected with a reference line. In a N/A application, these are left open to atmosphere.

Thanks for the wealth of replies. The Rambler material has been most helpful so far. There's a place in town that does conversions that I plan to talk to. I'll keep you all posted,
