Is this spindle OK? We're doing the complete front end job on the 72 Dart /6 with 9" drums. It looks kinda beat up and different from the right one. (sorry for the technical terms). Here's the left one:

This is a picture of the right spindle which looks much better:

Thanks,

If it were my car I would replace it. It might be perfectly all right but much of the damage is right where the outer bearing seats and the sealing surface next to the backing plate is a blue-black color; a sure sign that it has been pretty hot at one time. I wouldn't risk my life on it.

Thanks for the reply.

I found 2 knuckles on car-parts.com at the local yard (Comal Auto Salvage). They are $40 and $30. One is from a 71 Dart and the other is from a 68 Dart. What years are the same as our 72?

Thanks,

When my '64 messed up a spindle, I took it as a sign that it was time for a late A-body disk brake swap.

It is a great time to do disc brake swap if your taking front end apart to rebuild it, but if you choose the later disc brake setup be aware of the wheel bolt pattern difference. The rotors for the early disc brake setup that matches your bolt pattern are getting harder to find apparently.

The disk brake upgrade is in our future but just not now. Daily driver, time to complete, senior year of high school, already spent $ on drum redo and sbp wheels, etc. As we're rookies, it's a whole lot easier to stick to stock and follow steps 1,2,3 from the FSM. We'll probably wait a couple of years and the next time the front brakes need service, we'll swap. We've got a wish list of upgrades and plan to collect the parts first to minimize the downtime during the swap.

Thanks,

$30 is a bit excessive, I've seen people on here give 9" spindles away after they upgrade. its not terrible though if your in a pinch. I may have my 9" spindles sitting from my upgrade, will have to check.

Thanks, I'd be interested but worried shipping would be more than part at local yard (10 minute drive).

Fair enough - call the yard first before going out to ask if they still have them, the carparts website isn't necessarily live inventory.

Son will go by tomorrow or Tuesday at latest as basketball starts Wednesday. We'll check back here if part isn't available locally. Dart work may slow as basketball begins. Team is 52-6 last two years! Thanks for help.

Pierre,

How the heck did you know? We called, they said "sure, we've got it". When son shows up, they've got a right spindle calling it left. If you have an extra left spindle for 72 dart w/9" drums, we'd be interested in it. We'd much rather do business with a member of the slant 6 family. The carb we got from SlantSixDan last month works great! Idle adjustment was all it needed out of the box.

Thanks,
Larry

Too bad your not redoing 10" drums. I have some leftover parts I'd have given you, and I tossed some 9" stuff a while back that came off my 70. I used to buy a lot of stuff from Dan at Comal, it's not quite as good IMO since Wendall got more involved. :?

Lars,

Any other local sources for A-body parts? We've tried Dr. Mopar outside of Kyle. Decent selection but pricey. I haven't seen Comal. My son went by today and didn't have a great experience. I called before hand to confirm they had the part. Said yes, but really didn't. Wendall's grandson and my son know each other well.

Thanks for 10" offer. Pierre said he's looking tonight for leftovers.

Larry

Lars,

pm'd you back but msg is still sitting in my "outbox" along with another. Previous pm's sent are in my "sent box". Not sure if it's my malfunction or boards.

Thanks,
