I have a 66 cuda drag project target ET is 12 sec.
Am I correct that to put in an 8 3/4 rear It will have to be cut down to fit? If so who does this?
Next question would be can you get 410 or better gears for the 8 1/4? Where?
Either rear would have to be sure grip.
Thanks
Frank

You only cut down the 8 3/4 if you ended up with one out of one of the other car types, like one out of a B-body/Charger/etc... or C-body/Fury/Newport,etc... (the 8 3/4 A-body rear was offered in 67-72, the 8 1/4 from 1973-1976)....

4.10 or better gears can be gotten from Summit, or one of the many gear places online (not all manufacturers are created equal though)

Basically, you are going to have to 'part one' together, in the worst case scenario you have to buy and cut down an 8 3/4" out of a Fury, buy new A-body axles from Strange Manufacturing or have the C-body one's cut down and splined, then try to find a center section at a swap meet with 4.10's and maybe buy a sure grip center if for some reason it came with an "open diff"

(if you're really lucky, some hot rodder is selling his stash and might just have an A-body 8 3/4" rear that will just bolt in, then you can just swap in a 4.10 sure grip center chunk).

If it doesn't have to be Mopar, a 9" from a '57-'59 ford will bolt in.

whatever shaft you use, it will need to be cut down to match the new distance.

on this site you will hear lengths from 1.75 to 2.25 inches. best bet is to line everything up and measure center to center and take it out to a good shop and have it cut AND balanced.

So Im not likely to find a 8 3/4 rear w/904 for an A body ? I guess Im answering my own question, 8 3/4 only came behind 727s? And if I understand correctly the drive shaft will be too long by a couple of inches.
Thanks
Frank

There were more 8.75 A body rears used behind the 904 than the 727.
You may luck into a shaft.
Just note the wheelbase of the donor, 106, 108 or 111.

You can cut your shaft 1-3/4" if you have a 7-1/4 now.

You can also get adapter u-joints if you end up with a large yoke on your rear.

Note that my stock A Body 68 Dart 8 3/4 stock rear end had a 4 inch wheel bolt pattern which may or may not suit your drag application.

Thanks for the tip on SBP. I was talking to charrlie last night and He was telling me about that. I may need to rethink this rearend issue and go with an 8 1/4 or see how much narrowing a different body style is going to be in my area. Not to mention the Drum avail. problems etc.
Isnt it fun to put all this together in your head , you can see the finished product then, You find out its just not that easy to do. So you start to compromise. ARGH
Thanks
Frank
