I need to do some work on the seals for my 904 transmission.

I am wondering if it is possible to remove the transmission from under the car using jack stands or possibly ramps. I don't usually use ramps but I have a pair and a pair of jack stands. How much clearance am I going to need to pull it out from under the car?

Any tips would be helpful. I have never removed a transmission before.

Use the ramps for the front wheels and the jack stands at the rear. You'll have more than enough space to work and R&R the transmission. Now some tips from my experience: Use a jack with a block of wood under the oil pan to support the engine....trust me, it won't hurt it. Use another jack to support the trans. and remove the bolts holding it to the engine (after removing the linkage, cooling lines, neutral safety switch wiring and drive line of course). You will need a helper...not so much for lowering down the tranny, but for reinstalling it unless you have a transmission jack. Its not as bad as it looks, just be carefull and think out your moves!

Ramps may get you more clearance then a jack. Block up the rear wheels, no more tranny to keep the car in place ;)

I have a 3 ton jack that extends a fair amount - I got the car in the air on stands, lowered the tranny on the jack, then had to slide the jack out from under the tranny and drag the tranny out. I couldn't pull it back with the jack because it would smack the k-frame. If you have to go this route, leave some sheet metal under the tranny to make it easy to drag out.

Try to get a block of wood that covers the whole pan, easier balance this way. I didn't have to support the engine with a jack during removal, but it wouldn't hurt to jack up the engine a bit after removal and lower it on blocks so the engine doesn't hang on the mounts too long.

Don't forget the starter, tranny cross member, torque converter bolts, and watch the exhaust.
