The Auto trans in my 68 dart shifts hard from 1-2 more often than not. However,it ocasionaly shifts very nicely. 2-3 is much smother, but it is never as smooth as a friends 76 dart. Would a fluid and filter change help this or shoiuld i just live with it. The fluid is pinkish-red, so there isnt much discoloration. Any ideas?

Most people are trying to get harsher shifts for performance,and your trans will supposedly last longer with stiffer shifts, BUT here are some easy ideas for you to make it more sloppy.

You could try making sure the line pressure is set correctly on the valve body. An easier idea would be to readjust your kickdown linkage so that the shifts occur sooner and they will be less harsh too since the kickdown controls the line pressure to some extent. The kickdown rod that goes from just below your carb down and back to the trans has a slotted adjustment. Try loosening the locknut and pulling the linkage rod forward 1/4" to 1/2". Don't go to far, or the kickdown won't work and you'll burn up your trans.

I agree with Lou. Harder shifts provide better performance and longer life. My understanding is that with a smooth soft shift there is more slippage and wear,less fuel economy, poorer acceleration,and higher transmission temperatures.

You can also try adjusting the 2nd gear band, look for a stud and lock nut on the driver's side of the case. It may sound funny but *tightening* the band will tend to soften the shift to second.

Question: Does reverse also hit real hard? If so, someone could have taken the spring out of the accumulator valve and even added a strut to make it solid. This makes the bands hit harder. You will have to pull the trans pan and valve body to check this. (Do you have a service manual?)

Wow, mabey i dont want to mess with it. I try to drive gently to conserve gas (no money, im in college) So the prefomance shifting isnt an issue. I do like the idea of a cooler running longer lasting trans. Yes doug, it hits in reverse and the u joints creak and bang *cringe*. Thanks for the help.
