Post subject: 62 Valiant 170 Build up

OK guys here it goes-- 62 Valiant 170, Parts I have so far are a double 1bbl set up from Offenhauser, Also a aluminum valve cover ,Cloyes roller chain on order. I'm planning on a Mopar Performance cam and would like to shave the head without notching pistons. Any suggestions on cam specs or other additions for a mild build up would be greatly appreciated-

Uhmmm...."Mild Build-up"....from a 170.
What is your goal? Great gas milage, a low cost engine up-grade, want to go race in a 3 liter class?

I guess I'm looking for more info., is this an automatic trans car? What are your RPM goals?
Don't get me wrong, I like 170s but if you are after lots of low speed grunt, the longer stroke 225 is the way to go.

170 motors are "0" deck. my head is milled .090. I have a crane s264nc cam .434 lift and 222* dur. and my clearences are tight. I would plan on notching the pistons if I were you. I am taking the pistons out of my other motor and am going to notch them, so I can run a bigger cam.

I realize the 225 would be a better start but I'm just looking to build something unique to take to local auto shows. The 170 in the car has under 60K and the bottom end is very clean. I figured for low $$ I could just add some punch while the motor is apart considering what the original Hyperpak motor was capable of. I was considering following the Mopar Performance build up specs for the slant six. The car is an automatic and again will not be for race just local cruises. Down the road may be a conversion to a small block if budget permits.

Sounds reasonable,
I would spend most of the time on the head, do a mild "pocket port" & gasket match job. Mill .060 or so off the head. If the short block is comming apart, take a cut off of the block also.
Stick with a low lift "one step-up" cam like the MP 244º x .435 lift or take a look at what comp, crane or isky has to offer. dont go much beond .460 lift & 260º duration 108 or 110 lobe center.
Again, what RPM range are you looking for? 170s can be made to rev real high with the right cam and spinning the up pulls out Horse Power. Let us know if you are a "rev-it-up" kind of guy!

Thanks for the advise Doc, just 1 more ? I'm new to Slants (grew up w/a 440 GTX) and was wondering what could be expected by following the specs for the original Hyper-Pak that has been posted on several sights. Most info dosen't seem to referance any bottom end changes or was there any work that was required in addition to the dealer kit?. Finally, w/using the offenhauser dual 1bbl, mainifold, would it be of any benefit to run dual 2bbl's with a step up or two in cam, 268 dur/ 460 lift, 60 off the head , 340 springs some porting and a set of headers. Let me know what you think- & Thanks again-

With the MP 268 and other up-grades listed, you will have a pretty Hot 170, it will rev to 7000.
The idle will be a bit choppy, even at 1000 RPM, low RPM power will be "soft" untill about 3000.
Think about adding more compression and stall speed to off-set this cam. Piston to valve clearance will need to be checked.

Everything else on the list looks OK and don't worry about the bottom end, the bearings in your 170 are the same size as the ones in your 440!
If you have extra money to spend, grind all the rough edges off the crank and have it rebalanced.
You can also deburr and do your own balance on the con rods and pistons. (gram scale & some time)
