My uncle used to have one of those little Datsun pickups with the N.A. diesel and a five speed. It got over 40 MPG but topped out at 50. Put a Snapper riding mower in the back and it could only do 45 uphill.

If it wasn't smoking, it probably was running bio

I've never seen a regular diesel that didn't smoke... even little vdub rabbits produce some smoke...

I'm on the road today, but, I'll get my brother to get with a friend of his in Israel. Apparently the slant six lived on for years in Turkish built trucks, may still be in production for all I know. He thought that he had heard of a turbo diesel version of the slant in the Turkish heavy trucks.
Also at one time on a web site somewhere, I saw a list of codes for slant sixes that included test and projected models. There where to be turbo gas, and turbo diesel slant sixes.

Found it. Project number was A-513, turbo diesel RG 225. May have not made the US market, I know I've never seen one. Built 1981 to 1983. I'm thinking these must be the Turkish truck motors my brother saw while he was in Turkey and Israel. Be a pretty cool engine for an old A-100 pickup or van.

Those Turkish "Dodge" trucks did get a turbodiesel. It was not a slant-6 and had nothing to do with the factory prototype unit referenced in the list of engineering A-programs.

The '70s diesel Scout would have had a Nissan 6 cylinder diesel. They were normally aspirated and slow. Good engine though. Later ones were turbocharged so it wouldn't surprise me if the one you saw was updated.
It was AUDIBLY turbocharged, as if the absence of smoke (and the presence of zip) wasn't enough evidence. It was a very nice truck- if I tripped across one like that I'd probably snap it up in a heartbeat.

Yeah, well, don't bother looking North of the Mason-Dixon line or East of Central Texas...those trucks, like the Chevrolet Vega, were made out of compressed rust!

Hmmm. I've never seen a terribly (by my standards) rusted one. Most chronically rust prone cars (Vegas, Datsun Z-cars, etc.) WILL rust pretty badly even around here, though not to the point of falling apart like they do up North. But most Scouts and Travellalls that I see are generally in good shape.

Chrysler dealers did some Nissan diesel conversions in A bodies at one time. They are rare. If you recall somone was trying to sell one on slantsix.com for a while in California.

BTW dad has a 82 Cadillac with the 5.7 diesel. 250K on it. He had to rebuild the injector pump twice but it still goes well. Just not up hills! 30+mpg. It is naturally aspirated.
