Hi Valiant/Mopar/Slant6 enthusiasts: I'm just starting to work on a 1965 Valiant 225 cu in. This is my first Mopar experience. I'm sure that I'll be posting here frequently as the project continues. I apologise ahead fo time for all the stupid questions I'll ask. The probelm this week, as I plan the project, is whether or not to outsource the tranny rebuild or do it myself. I've never rebuilt a tranny before but I've rebuilt several carburators and an engine or two. I end up doing pretty much all my car repairs/maintenance because I've had really bad luck with repair shops and end up having to do it again anyway - not to mention that it's cheaper and I kinda enjoy it. I guess I've always been somewhat intimidated of doing any transmission work, especially automatic transmission -- this is the first auto trans I've owned. So, I nee some expert help from all of you experts out there - expert means anyone who knows more than I do; which is all of you at this point. So please don't hesitate to give a suggestion. Here are a few of the questions I have: -am I looking at something that I could do myself? -if so, how long should it take? -what parts should I order it; a gasket kit, a full rebuild kit, etc...? where's a good place to get the parts? what's a good price? -are there any good, simple books that would help? -How difficult is it to rebuild the tranny? (probably looking for more of a pep talk/past experience thing here) -If I do send it out to someone else to do it what's a ballpark figure for the work and parts (I'll be taking the tranny out and putting it back in myself)

So that's what I can think of now, at this hour in the morning. Any help that anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I rebuilt the transmission in my 1975 Valiant about 11 years ago. The Chrysler automatics are some if the easiest to rebuild and don't require a whole pile of specialty tools. You will need some snap ring pliers and I forget what else. There are some spring compressors made for the transmission but you can either improvise and / or get a helper to help squeeze the clutch springs and accumulator spring while removing and instaling the snap rings.

You will need a lot of clean work space to do the job. There are many, many parts in the transmission and you will need to lay them out in the correct order as you disassemble it.

I got a rebuilt kit from a local transmission shop ($48). It was a lot cheaper than a place like NAPA. However, the output seal was not in the kit and I got that from NAPA very cheap. My transmission also needed the output bushing (where the driveshaft goes in) and that was also cheap (less than $4 at NAPA). There are different kits. Some are just a seal and clutch kit (which is what I used). Others cost extra and come with many of the brass bushings. The amount of wear and miles on the transmission will determine what all you need to do with it.

When I rebuilt the transmission back in 1990 all the parts, transmission oil, and filter cost me a grand total of $65.00.

Get a factory service manual as it will have lots of good pictures of everything and step-by-step instructions.

A year later the reverse band broke in the transmission. I got a new band at the transmission shop ($16) and ordered the few individual seals/gaskets I needed at NAPA for $6 or so.

I haven't re-built my transmission yet, but have looked into it in preparation for that inevitable day. Check out the enclosed links for a re-build kit and tech manual. You could order the tech manual first to see if you're comfortable with the job. I've also seen videos being sold for the A904 but can't remember where. JC Whitney sells one for the A727 that may be worth getting. I think the two transmissions are similar. <A HREF="http://www.jcwhitney.com/SearchCatConta ... d=23806</A>
