How will you seal the water jacket relative to the crankcase?

I'm excited! Should be interesting to say the least, if it stays together.

Will you get a custom copper head gask made, or try to use the Aussie 3.66" bore gask?

Press fit, Loctite, and block rock.
The only weak link I can see is the @#$%*&+ Phord rods, but flatheads were notorious for accepting abuse, and I'm too old to do that anymore.
I'm leaning toward the Aussie gasket with a die grinder cleanup of the overhang with the deck plate tightened just enough to hold the gasket. With all the small bumps and ridges I'm going to have, a composition gasket might work best.

That should be enough to seal the head gasket as long if everything is good and flat. I don’t know which head gasket would be best but I would use head studs for sure.


Yea, get the pics when you can. And I don’t know what kind of metal your sleeves are going to be made of but the import guys have been doing some crazy stuff with sleeves in the Honda engines. There are some companies out there that can make extra strong sleeves if it becomes necessary.

Any idea on a time frame for testing this monster?

ARP head, main, and water pump studs are on the list.Going to try spun, nodular cast iron sleeves with 1/8" walls. As far as testing goes, I just put em in the car and drive. About the only date I can give you for sure right now is Carlisle, 2007. Still have to do the crank, the head, make headers, swap to front disc brakes, put in an 8 3/4. and convince myself to cut a big enough hole in a 38K Gennie for a Pistol Grip OD 4 speed. That's the hard part. :cry: I keep telling myself it's OK since it's a 4 door.

:oops: :oops: I guess everyone has a week like this one. The problem with the SD card is not the card or reader. The camera was set for internal storage so there was nothing on the card to read. Sure wish I knew what I did with the USB cable that came with the camera. Ray quit boring after the second hole. He got a slew of Chebbies in and decided not to tie up the boring machine until he has sleeves waiting to be installed. Can't order sleeves 'cause everybody's in Florida for a convention and won't be back until next week (according to Darton and LA sleeve). To top it all off with a cherry, my doctor woke me up bright and early Friday morning (how come you can't get an appointment that early) with the exciting news that my PSA level is 6.20 and she has scheduled an appointment with an ologist to check it out. I think I'm just going to step back, take a break, and try to have a Merry Ho Ho. Ya'll do likewise and I'll get back after Stupid Season is over. :shrug: :shrug:

FWIW, I've decided to call this thing Slantmutant. That was the only cheap thing I got accomplished so far. Custom Wiseco pistons, pins, locks, and rings-$112 each. They will be here in 3 to 4 weeks. Custom sleeves from LA Sleeve-$145 each. They will be here in 7 to 8 weeks. Eagle H beam rods-$85 each. They are in stock and take 3 to 4 days to arrive. I'll order those next month. Maybe if ya'll start hammering LA Sleeve and Wiseco with inquiries and show some demand, the price will come down. The prices I paid were for one offs. The pistons are 2.2 Turbo configuration in 94 mm and considering that they are forged with all the goodies, not too bad on price. I'm still choking on the sleeves though, but what do you do? :roll: Guess I'll start in on the chassis while I wait on parts. Idle hands and all that rot. Everybody have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. :wink:

Glad you brought this up, it never crossed my mind. Part number CRS7000F3D gets you 8 Eagle H beam rods for a flathead Ford V8. $625.33. Part number CRS7000F3D-1 gets you 1 rod. Looks like the rough math was a little off, my calculator says $78.25 based on the set price. These are 7" center to center and the rod journal is .046" smaller than the slant rod. Stock stroke and 198 rods would work great in their stead. You'll find them at eaglerods.com. Can't give you a part number on the pistons or sleeves, but you can call Al at Wiseco 1-800-321-1364 (8A-5P EDT) and tell him you would like 6 94mm finished bore size 2.2 Turbo pistons and he will know what you want (or should). For sleeves call Dave at LA Sleeve 1-800-822-6005 (8A-5P PDT) and tell him you would like 6 94mm finished bore size Toyota 22R sleeves 7" long and cut the length to fit the amount of ledge you can leave in the bottom of your bore. All you can do on their web sites are download order forms or catalogs. Call em. Often. Hope this helps.

OK, I have a very good setr of 198 rods... I'd use them. Sleeves and pistons, I'd call those guys, THANKS! pricing on the sleeves is $145 each, and pistons???

I was quoted $112 each for pistons, pins, locks, and rings. The width on the big end of the flathead rod is not a problem since the crank journal is going to have to be cut to fit anyway. The dealbreaker is the piston pin. Had Ray try one of the stockers on a 2.2 Turbo piston that I have and the flathead pin boss is way too small in diameter and there isn't enough meat to enlarge them to fit. Back to the drawing board for rods. :(

If your going to cut the crank to fit the rods then these should work.Rods


If there to long let me know they have a set that is a bit shorter.

A great big thanx and a tip of the hat to Lucky13 for the final piece to the puzzle. Rod problem is solved and Slantmutant gets even uglier. How does 284 inches sound? Talked to both Wiseco and LA Sleeve today and they are going to confer and see if they can offer pistons and sleeves as a package. If it happens it will be 5 or 6 months in the future, so be patient. I am going to have to start cutting corners to get this done for Carlisle, so it looks like I am going to wind up running a stock '76 Peanut head (unleaded valves and seats already there). Any quirks about this head I should know about? Bear in mind that I am not going for horsepower. The target is lots of torque. Once again, thanks for all the ideas and input, and a special thanks to Jess. :D :D
