Not exactly a slant question, but on 97 grand cherokee, just rebuilt AMC type six..very impressive engine, as tough as a slant, in my experience with em in 4 beaters going back to 60's; valve rocker setup is especailly cool, sort of short but beefy half rocker shafts per valve, held by a stud and nut like a chevy..don't need any adj pushrods, or screws in rocker arms; 258 cu in , FI too. Pulls pretty good, really 21 MPG...

After rebiild rest of car has 200k;trans etc perfect, but Dana 44 in rear makes steady noise, does not change AT ALL with throttle position, or when going around corners hard (wheel bearings), pinions . Never saw that before. Fluids changed twice, new pinion seal, axle seals too.

WE are sure it is axle, had car on jack stands listening while running.

Best I can dscribe it is like an old corvette T10 idling in neutral, but louder...Nothing bad happens, over 30 K this way, but don't like it...Any ideas?

no, all factory as is except pinion seal.... I wonder if working on that has any connection, but it came apart easily and went back together per book..Rear cover is new, corrosion, these have no drain plug (NICE WAY TO SAVE .25!)
