 Post subject: Hilborn power guess?
PostPosted: Fri Jan 25, 2002 6:45 am
Hi,

I'm thinking about the Hilborn injection system, will probably send them an e-mail today.

Anyone have a guess on the power increase over a 4bbl (Offy intake with 390 Holley) in a full race drag engine? Gas and Alcohol guesses both appreciated. I'm guessing 10-15% minimum, is that somewhere in the ballpark?

thanks for any help,
mark

Please Mark, (and everyone else "thinking about this") Send Hilborn an email.

As for the power gain, that depends on how "hot" your engine build-up is, especially in the head / cam flow numbers.

What Hilborn injection will do is remove most all of the intake "track" flow restriction we see with a carb. and plenum manifold.
Individual runner (IR) set-ups will also eliminate fuel distribution issues we always "fight" in a plenum type "wet" manifold system.
This set-up will flow way more air / fuel then 390 CFM ( to be honest, I have not done the math on how much CFM it should flow but I bet the port and valve size become the flow rate limiter, not the venturi / butterfly.

So, how well do you have the current set-up "dialed-in"?
10-15% gain sounds pretty reasonable.

Thanks for the reply Doc.

I sent an E-mail to Hilborn already (1-25).

The setup I'm using in the FED now was built with TRW 2125 pistons (8/1?), Mopar Performance 284/528 cam, stock rods, stock stroke (225 stuff), Mopar Performance ported head. Offy intake with 390 Holley, Powerglide w/4000 stall, 4.56 gears, 10x31 tires. 12.06 @ 111 @1550. I compute 166 hp at the wheels.

The planned setup for this season will be same head and intake (maybe Hilborn if they produce it), stock rods (198 or 225), stock crank, high compression pistons with '0' quench (12 or 13/1) and a bigger cam (Ultradyne), something like 250 or 260 duration at 0.050. Switching to a 904 with brake and 4200+ converter, same gears and tires. I'd like to see mid 10s with this combo but that's probably a bit optimistic. I'm guessing about 215-225hp at the wheels. Future plans would call for more head work/larger valves.

This car would also be a 'natural' for a twin turbo, EFI system on Alcohol, no car body to 'interfere'...I think I should try to 'cert' the chassis before those plans go very far...

Thanks,
mark
