i could be horribly, horribly wrong but normally i think a two piece driveshaft is used when a vehicle needs clearance for part of the frame or, in the case of a truck, better clearance for off-roading.
If this is the case, i wouldn't suggest cutting your frame to install a one piece driveshaft, cause it probably wouldn't do anything good for you.
That said, i don't know what the underside of your valiant looks like, and there are probably people on here who know much better than I, but thats my .02
There's a good article on two piece driveshafts here. http://www.rodandcustommagazine.com/tec ... haft_tech/

Ermmm...no, a '64 Valiant hasn't got a 2-piece driveshaft. It's got a 1-piece driveshaft. I think what you are seeing is the Ball & Trunnion type front universal joint.

What problem or symptom are you experiencing that makes you want to change the driveshaft?

That same basic design was used behind big blocks without a problem. Wither the driveshaft can withstand the torgue of a \6 is the least of your worries. A good driveline shop should have rebuild kits. That same shop could also build you a replacement driveshaft with standard U joints.
