What years/cars did the 8 1/4 come in? I just need a year range so I know where to look. I tried the "search" option.......couldn't find a definate answer. I thought I read something about a Dakota axle?
I just don't trust my 7 1/4...........

The 8¼" rear axle was available in A-bodies from '73-'76.
Also in F-bodies from '76-'80, and in M-bodies from '77-'89, and in R-bodies from '79-'81 (think I got those R-body years right). Also in cars bigger than A/F/M bodies from '73-up, and in Dakotas through '98 or so, but the bigger the vehicle you get the axle from, the more work is required to make it fit an A-body.

Aside from driveshaft length, the A-body unit fits right in place of a 7¼". The F/M-body 8¼" requires the spring perches moved.

B-body cars could be a equipped with the 8 1/4" in the "economy V-8" (aka 318 and a 3 spd manual tranny) models as early as 1969-1970, the casting number for said axle housing would be 2852904/2852905, rumor has it even though the width changed for the 1971+ B-body the casting number has remained the same.

Also 1991-1996 Jeep Cherokees also can be equipped with a mopar 8.25" rear axle...

Dakotas 97 thru 04 had 6 bolt hubs. I believe earlier Dakotas were 7 1/4" units.

Growing older is unavoidable but growing up is strictly optional.

some early dakotas had 8.25 rears and the 5 x 4.5 bolt circle. i had an 87 that was equipped that way. look for the V6 models if hunting thru early dakotas for rears.

FWIW.....My '95 Dak is an 8.25SG, with 3.55 gears, and 6-lug pattern. Don't quote me, but I think Mopar started the 6-lug in '93.
