I have a 66 Dart four door, been racing for @10 years. Trying to take out my 3:91's from the
8 3/4 rear and put in some new Richmond 4:56's. The new ring and pinion only fit a 742 case (according to Richmond). I have 741's and 489's. I can get an empty 742 case. QUESTION # 1: CAN I TAKE ALL THE GUTS--SUREGRIP, BEARINGS, ETC OUT OF A 489 TO PUT INTO THE 742 WITH MY RICHMOND GEARS??? If not, I'll need to find the right gears for the 489. P.S. I have an extra A-Body 8/34 I could sell. It'd take me a couple months to find all the pieces to make it complete and it wouldn't be very cheap. Dismantled it could be shipped mail or UPS. Question #2. Is it worth putting a chunk of money into a block? I've had great luck racing a stock block. I think it isn't worth boring 60 over and/or adding forged pistons for the cost. I can get the compression from head work and almost the same cubic inches from a stock 225. Jack from Kimball Minnesota.

Hi Jack,
The sure grip will interchange, but you might need the '742 bearings ('489 diff bearings might be different). The '742 pinion bearings are unique to the '742. I've got some extra '742 stuff, I'd trade you an empty '742 for an empty '489 if you want. I live in Iowa and will be in the twin cities in the next few weeks. Let me know if you want to trade.

regards,
mark

Mark, I'd be interested in working out a trade, I have to look at what I'm doing with my 489's but I think I have extra. I also work in the Cities three days a week. Jack

If a trade can be worked out, do it, because the 742 has a 1.75 straight pinion and the 489 has a 1.875 tapered pinion. I doubt that the pinion bearings will interchange.
