My car has been slipping out of drive and into neutral when making left hand turns. I have checked the adjustment at the trans and it appears to be normal. What could be causing this? It seems like friction inside the column. What might be needed to be greased inside there? How would I go about getting to it?

You probably have to completley Rewmove and then disassemble the column To get at it.


There are Bearings and tubes that ride inside one another. Get one from the boneyard to Dissassemble first to practice on.


You might find some old brittle -dry-rotted Broken Bearing supports that do not support anymore.

Before you disassemble anything open the hood and take a look at the lower end.

A bit of grease up in there might solve your problem, at least for now.

I would also check your motor and trans mounts. If one or more are broken or rubber is weak, the engine/trans may be moving too much and pulling on the shifter linkage.

Pop the hood, have someone look at the motor and mounts, and put it in gear and give it a little gas (hard on the brakes!).

I got some spray lubricant and sprayed it in the hole where the blinker goes into the column. Problem seems to be solved for the time being.

I've had good luck freeing up column shifters that hang up on the steering shaft by using a good grade of aerosol silicone spray (I like CRC brand). Get the straw in there where the shift collar rotates relative to the top casting of the column housing, and spray in towards the centre of the column while racking the shifter up and down from Park to 1 and back again. Then go to the junction of the shift collar and the lower column housing and repeat. If you get down under the dash, you will find slots through which you can see the actual steering shaft. Pick the highest slot (closest to the steering wheel) and angle the straw so it points rearward (towards the steering wheel). Give a good, healthy spray while operating the steering wheel and shifter. For good measure while you have the silicone out, shoot some in where the shift lever enters the collar. This won't always solve the self-shifting problem, but it often will.
