An electrical tach connects by 2 wires to the distributor. A mechanical tach requires a gear drive on the distributor similar to that of a speedometer but I am not aware of any mechanical tachs or tach drive distributors for a slant 6.

I picked up the 'Sunpro Mini Tachometer' (electric)
It's inexpensive (around $30 or so) only 2-5/8 in. diameter,
and mounts well on most steering columns (with hose clamp or a couple of heavy tie-raps, eliminates having to drill holes in dash)
Very easy to install with simple instructions, includes everything (except clamp / tie rap for column mounting)
Distributed by Actron Mfgr. Co. (under lic. from Snap-On Tools)
usually available in dreaded Auto Supermarkets;
AutoZone, PepBoys and such...

(accurate enough for my needs, and has worked fine for 6 yrs. now)

I saw an interior picture of a 1965 Barracuda Formula S with the 273 V8. It had a factory tach mounted on the left side of the dash well below the headlight switch. Talk about an afterthought. By the time it would take to focus in on it a driver would be off into the weeds or over rev and blow the engine.

Here's what I did on my Miser.

Tach is on the left on top of the steering column.
I have my water and oil gage on the right in the dash panel.
