Hi all,

Has anybody tried weighing different brands of flat tappet lifters? I would be interested to know which one is the lightest.

Thanks,

Greg

I would have to guess that the stock Slant "barbell" lifter would be lightest, unless you go to an aftermarket hollow lifter. Not sure if those are even available anymore.

Hmmm. It would make intuitive sense to get the lightest lifter, since it would have less mass=less inertia=easier to follow the lobe of the cam.

Was there a problem with the old slant lifters? I will check with the dealer to see if they are still available.

I just weighed a MP barbell lifter that came with the MP Purple Shaft slant six cams, 98.8 grams.

I believe so, although I would have to check part numbers to be sure. I know the outer diameter is the same so you can swap them, and it wouldn't surprise me if Chrysler just used the same lifters across the line.

They are the Same, or atleast you can swap them between the engines. The Old BarBell type can be bought at 440Source.com. (they have them listed for 440's & even quote that they where intended for /6 engines) Hollow lifters I dont know about where to get.

To tell the truth unless you are reving RPM above 7000 its not going to make any diff either way on the weight. Although it might help in being able to run a slightly lighter Spring Pressure & then could help in cam shaft wear if you was to go through the trouble of fitting the lightest springs that you could get by with. Finding that limit may get a bit costly until you figure it out. This also would not be good for a Turbo app either ( going real light springs).

Shubeck lifters are the best money can buy. Most Stock and Super Stockers use them as they are trying to pull out the last enth of horsepower. The catch is about $800-$900 for a set of 16.

One more to add to the list. Erson lifters are 98 grams each. Even though they are the bar bell style, they weigh more than the other manufacturers.

The Shubeck lifters I would not recamend for anything that was street driven at all(the ones that are not made of metal). They are a very good lifter, & the price reflects this. But if you let them run loose any at all they have been seen to simply explode from the hammering that a loose rocker arm would cause. Its the kinda of equipment that you want to keep a good check on between each round.

Now there Roller lifters ( metal ones) that have no needle bearings in the roller have proven to be a very good lifter. But this is in the durablility department, I am not sure of there weight. But as i meantioned before, lifter weight IMHO is nothing to be consired with on a /6. I believe the crank would let go before any RPM that took advantage of light weight lifters could be reached. But who knows, maybe there is some 8000 rpm /6s out there.

I saw an ad for Howards cams that states they make direct lube extreme load solid lifters. A laser burns a 0.021" hole in the bottom of the lifter. This allows a constant flow of oil to the cam lobe. This may work for slants so we won't have to grove lifter bores.
