 Post subject: #3 Thrust Bearing
PostPosted: Fri Feb 15, 2002 9:58 pm
Hey Doc! I have a 225 w/3-speed manual in a 1967 a100. I have the pan off to replace some gaskets
and noticed my end clearance to be .013. I pulled
the cap and took a look and sure enough it does
show signs of wear on the clutch side. Should I
replace the bearing and if so how?? The van only
has 60000 original miles. The bearing surface
looked great along with the crank journal.

You can replace the mains by sliding them out and in using the crank. Use a short nail with a large flat head and slide it into the oil feed hole, carefully turn the crank around so the nailhead catches on the bearing's edge and slides it out of the saddle.
(watch for the bearing's locator tab, push from the other side)
Do the reverse to install the new bearings.

If at all possible, replace the main seal but getting the upper half of a rope seal out can be a real hassel.

Doug,

Boy, it's too bad we didn't find out about THAT goofy coincidence earlier. I was in Vegas this weekend playing rugby - just got back to Pasadena tonight. Hope you had/are having a good time in Sin City.

Cheers,

Lou

Yup, still in Vegas, off to Hoover Dam today, back to LA on Tuesday. I hope to get over to Hilborn to pay them a visit but have to play things by ear, my wife and kids keep reminding me, we are on a *family* vacation!
I will see if I can sneek onto a computer and see what's happening later in the week.

Doug,
Try and win enough money to fund the aluminum head project and the turbo project and while you at it win enough to build the fastest slant 6 doorslammer on the planet! ;)
