I'm going to be rebuilding my drum brakes (front & rear) on my 68 Valiant. So far all I have had a chance to do (between all the honey-do's) is remove the drums on the rear. The brakes are pretty much rusted and caked so I was going to tear them down, clean them up, paint the backing plates and replace the hardware and drums. On top of this about 2 stud have been broken off and need to be replaced. I was just going to replace them all while I'm at it just incase the others decided to break. My question is, how do I get the rear hubs off? Is it complicated to do this or pretty simple? As for the studs should I take them to a shop to get them out and new ones put in, or can I do that myself?

Thanks, Dan

Before you proceed, get all three books mentioned in this post. They are by far the most important tools you will have. You are working with a critical safety-related system on your car, so it's really important that you know what you are doing, why you are doing, and how to do it correctly at each step of the way. Your life and the lives of everyone else on the road with you depend on it.

Thanks Dan, I have actually been looking for some good literature but I wasnt sure what was reliable and what not. Here is a quick question for getting the manual. While looking through rockauto the other day I came across the owner's manual there (along with Parts Guide and Repair Manual). Its made by Bishko and I didnt know if it was a reprint or one they came up with on there own. If its not worth it then I'll find it elsewhere. Thanks again, I appreciate it.

Bishko is a vendor of automotive manuals. Kind of an abrasive guy, and rather on the pricy side last time I checked. He has a deal with RockAuto to offer his stuff through their site. I have best results with the vendor I mention in the link previously posted...

I went and ordered the owners manual and repair manual plus I found Peterson's (published in '69) on ebay for $3 plus shipping (another $3). So I should have owners and repair manual on monday. I dont know yet on the peterson book. Thanks again for pointing me to those books.

While I'm here, I am going to buy new drums and parts for the brakes and rockauto has the drums for around $15 ea but I have seen them at checkers, autozone, and elsewhere for 45 and up. Are the ones at rockauto quality or is this why they are that cheap?
