A little while back I got a cylinder head from Brian here on the board. I was wondering what a good way to clean it up would be? I'd like to make sure its clean before I try any painting, porting, and installing.

The best way is to take it to a machine shop and have it "boiled" this removes all the scale from the water jackets and if their equipment is in good condition all carbon will be removed too along with any paint. This removes any oil so use of a soft wire brush and any solvent it will be ready to paint. If you plan any machine work most shops do this first anyway. as all of us budget minded slanters, ask for ruff cost to clean and check things like valves and guides. Most shops charge a minimal amount with hopes that you will go deeper in your pockets. If you are doing it all at home disregard all the above but the brush and solvent.
